Amplicare, Ananda Professional to bring automated CBD, wellness education to pharmacies

3/15/2019
Pharmacy software company Amplicare and CBD manufacturer Ananda Professional, which exclusively serves independent pharmacies, have formed a partnership to expand pharmacy access to CBD and wellness education through automation software.

The new software will enable pharmacists to identify patients who can benefit from an Ananda Professional product and help facilitate CBD education to those patients.

The companies said that according to Statista, in 2018 the CBD market reached $500 million in sales, up from just over $100 million in 2014. The Brightfield Group expects the market to reach $22 billion by 2022. "The growth of the market indicates consumer interest in the natural product, which the companies believe pharmacies are well-placed to take a leadership position in providing," the companies said.

Ananda Professional and Amplicare will initially focus on addressing patients who are on opioids or medications to treat chronic pain. “The effects of the opioid crisis resonate across the country as roughly 150 people are affected by overdoses daily. Given Ananda Professional’s research on the value of adding CBD to stable opioid patients, the new partnership will provide pharmacists with the tools to guide patients, while playing a proactive role in mitigating the effects of the epidemic in their communities,” the companies said.

“The clinical evidence for CBD as a safe and viable therapeutic option for managing conditions such as chronic pain, insomnia, and mood disturbances is promising," Ananda Professional’s chief science officer and medical director Alex Capano said. “Guidance from a licensed pharmacist who is well-versed in patients’ medications and health histories will help ensure appropriate and effective use of hemp-derived extracts.”

The companies also are working closely together on a series of regional continuing education symposiums to further support the clinical education of pharmacists. Featuring leading clinicians in CBD therapy and research, the symposiums will address the clinical data on CBD and best commercialization practices for pharmacists interested in providing CBD to their patients and communities. They will begin in Philadelphia on May 11 and move across different regions of the country throughout the year.

“Amplicare chose to partner with Ananda Professional after thoroughly reviewing the CBD market and understanding the health benefits associated with hemp-derived CBDs,” Amplicare’s co-founder and CEO Matt Johnson said. “We were drawn to Ananda Professional’s dedication to the education of pharmacists and staff about CBD and the endocannabinoid system, as well as its commitment to product quality and transparency, and the pivotal role they played in advocating for the Farm Bill.”

“We are excited to partner with Amplicare,” Ananda Professional’s chief revenue officer Chuck Schneider said. “Our core values align with Amplicare’s reputation, which is built on providing cutting-edge solutions and programs to help independent pharmacies improve patient health and drive clinical outcomes. We had heard about the benefits of Amplicare Restore from mutual customers and recognized an opportunity to combine our resources to help pharmacies address underlying health-and-wellness issues common among patients.”
