Milan Puskar, co-founder of Mylan, dies
PITTSBURGH — Mylan co-founder and former chairman and CEO Milan "Mike" Puskar died Saturday, the generic drug maker said. Puskar, who retired from Mylan as chairman in 2009, was 77.
"We were deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Puskar, a truly one-of-a-kind individual," Mylan chairman and CEO Robert Coury said. "Mike was a pioneer in many ways and helped to create the generics industry as we know it today. Those of us who knew Mike personally will always remember him as a strong leader, thoughtful mentor, generous benefactor and faithful friend."
Puskar, a former U.S. Army soldier, and fellow soldier Don Panoz formed Mylan in West Virginia in 1961, according to the company. Mylan originally was a distributor that bought finished goods and sold them to pharmacies and doctors, but won Food and Drug Administration approval to manufacture Penicillin G in 1966. In 2007, under Coury’s leadership, Mylan bought a majority stake in India’s Matrix Labs, thus making Mylan a global company. Since then, it has become the world’s third-largest generic drug maker, and the largest in the United States.
"Mr. Puskar was a principal figure in the development of the modern generic industry, an extraordinary thought leader in the pharmaceutical community and a kind and generous individual whose innumerable charitable contributions continue to improve lives across our society," a statement by the Generic Pharmaceutical Association read. "His tireless efforts to ensure the highest quality in all facets of the generic drug business have set a standard in industry that will have a lasting impact for years to come."
Derma e Natural Bodycare hires Canadian regional sales manager
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. — Derma e Natural Bodycare has hired Kathleen Dills as Canadian regional sales manager.
With Canada as the second-largest market for derma e products, the new role was created to help support and grow the company’s North American business, the company stated.
Dills comes to derma e with 17 years of experience in the natural products industry. Previously, Dills worked as the director of vendor relations and marketing for Purity Life Health Products, Canada’s largest natural health products supplier.
In the new position, Dills will be responsible for the sales of derma e’s 90-plus anti-aging and natural body care products throughout Canada. This includes territory development, account management and execution of tactical programs to grow new and maintain existing business. The position also will focus on trainings and education of the derma e brand.
Giant-Carlisle to donate to breast cancer groups
CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food Stores is marking National Breast Cancer Awareness Month by donating more than $25,000 to organizations that address the disease, the Royal Ahold-owned supermarket chain said.
Giant, also known as Giant-Carlisle to distinguish it from Giant Food of Landover, Md., also owned by Ahold, said that for every pink reusable bag it sells, it will donate 5 cents to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, Susan G. Komen’s Maryland and West Virginia chapters and the Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center. The floral department will donate 25 cents to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the sale of each pink "awareness" and "hope & strength" bouquet.
"This deadly disease impacts 1-out-of-8 women in the United States, and we are proud to paint our stores pink to help raise awareness about breast cancer and preventable measures," Giant-Carlisle president Rick Herring said. "By donating 5 cents from the sale of each pink reusable bag this month, we are also proud to support local organizations in our community as they work to find a cure."
When customers buy select items from Proctor & Gamble, General Mills, Giant’s store brand and other participating vendors during the month, they will receive such rewards as a $10 prepaid Visa card or money off their grocery order, while Giant and the vendor will donate to a local breast cancer organization. Meanwhile, the chain will donate $1 for each person who shares a breast cancer-related story on Giant’s Facebook page, for a total of up to $5,000, while pharmacies will hand out breast self-examination brochures.
