Cabinet Health is launching their refillable over-the-counter medicines in over 500 Target locations nationwide, as well as on Target.com.

As the first Target Zero-approved medicine brand, the launch marks an exciting step change for both the brand and the industry at large, broadening the reach of sustainable, compostable medicine options to millions of homes across the United States, the company said.

With 93%  of Americans buying their medicines in physical retail stores where single-use plastic reigns supreme, Cabinet said it aims to transform what shoppers have come to expect from the pharmacy aisle and to help create a sustainable shopping destination for eco-conscious consumers looking to ditch plastic in an often-overlooked area of their homes.

Cabinet Health was built to tackle the single-use plastic crisis in health care, with its sustainable and affordable medicines and packaging solutions. The brand’s expansion into mass retail bears a timely resonance as plastic waste in medicine is one of the leading accelerators to climate change—an issue that not only threatens our individual health and the health of the planet, but society at large. Today, the pharmaceutical industry produces more than 194 billion single-use plastic medicine bottles every year, of which only 2-5% are actually recycled. The rest ends up in our oceans, landfills and eventually our bodies, Cabinet Health said.

Cabinet Health’s sustainable medicine system introduces an innovative solution to help combat the plastic waste crisis: refillable, shatter-tested and child-safe glass medicine bottles that can be reused again and again. When your bottle runs empty, Cabinet offers zero waste refills in compostable, medicine-safe pouches that are made out of 100% earth-digestible materials and are backyard and city-compost friendly. By switching to the brand's refillable system, Cabinet Health's customers eliminate up to one pound of plastic waste annually and hundreds of pounds of plastic in a lifetime–an important metric as more and more consumers make conscious choices to avoid plastic waste to help mitigate the repercussions of microplastics that impact our food, water supply, and ultimately, our physical health.

“Cabinet’s expansion into Target is a leap forward for both the company and the healthcare industry as a whole,” said Russell Gong, resident and co-founder of Cabinet Health. “We’re proud to lead this movement and to be the first and only sustainably packaged, Target Zero approved medicine option in the over-the-counter aisle today. We know that true  transformation begins with like-minded partners who are just as ambitious about eradicating plastic waste as we are. That’s why we’re so thrilled to be working with Target to make sustainable medicine accessible to millions of households across the country.”

As of Dec. 17, Target guests will be able to purchase 14 SKUs of Cabinet Health medications, including Allergy Relief, Pain Relief, Digestive Care, and Cold & Flu Relief.

In addition to leading the industry in sustainability, Cabinet Health's medicines use FDA-approved active ingredients sourced from world-class manufacturers, formulated to be equally as effective as leading brands, and batch-level tested and certified to be free from toxic metals, known carcinogens, and allergens such as gluten. Recognizing that accessibility goes hand-in-hand with affordability, the company said, noting that Cabinet also is proud to offer up to 20% savings on a per pill basis in their premium, signature refillable and compostable packaging.

“Expansion into Target is a critical milestone to further our mission. Cabinet is an easy sustainable swap that delivers on quality, transparency, and value. We want families to trust that our products deliver the same fast-acting symptom relief without compromise: we offer the highest quality active ingredients with zero plastic waste at a better value that saves you money in the long run,” said Achal Patel, CEO and co-founder of Cabinet Health.

Cabinet Health products are currently found on CabinetHealth.com and other brick-and-mortar and online retailers such as CVS, Grove Collaborative and Amazon. Cabinet Health is a certified B-Corp that prioritizes minimizing carbon footprint, water waste and material waste in their offerings and practices. Since launching in 2018, Cabinet Health has helped customers divert more than 55k lbs. of plastic waste from entering the environment.
