    ATLANTA According to new data compiled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that covers use of smokeless tobacco in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guam released Thursday, the rates of smokers who also use smokeless tobacco, including chew tobacco and snuff, range from 0.9% in Puerto Rico to 13.7% in Wyoming.

  • Lupin's generic Clarinex gets FDA approval

    SILVER SPRING, Md. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic treatment made by Lupin Pharmaceuticals for allergies, according to FDA records.

     

    The drug is a generic version of Schering-Plough’s Clarinex.

     

     

    Clarinex has annual sales of around $229 million, according to IMS Health data reported by several media in India, where Lupin is based.

  • Research shows retail clinics can replace up to 1-in-4 emergency room visits

    CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. Up to 1-in-4 emergency room visits could take place at a retail-based health clinic or urgent care center, saving potentially $4.4 billion annually, according to new research published in the September issue of Health Affairs.

    Furthermore, the research found that such retail clinics as Take Care Clinics have been shown to save patients $279 to $460 per visit compared with emergency room costs.

  • FDA approves new treatment for bacterial infections

    NEW YORK The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new treatment for bacterial infections made by Forest Labs, Forest said.

    The drug maker announced the approval of Teflaro (ceftaroline fosamil) for the treatment of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia and acute bacterial skin and skin structure infection, also known as ABSSSI, caused by bacteria that include methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureaus.
