Costco keeps sales momentum throughout January

Costco Wholesale shared its January retail sales results.

The company continued its momentum, reporting net sales in January totaled $15.76 billion, an increase of 15.5% from $13.64 billion last year.

Costco noted that the Lunar New Year/Chinese New Year occurred on Feb. 1, eleven days earlier this year, and said the shift favorably impacted the month’s other international and total company sales by approximately 4% and 0.5%, respectively.

For the 22 weeks ended Jan. 30, 2022, the company reported net sales of $92 billion, an increase of 16.4% from $79.1 billion last year.

Comparable sales for four weeks in the United States rose by 14.1% and by 15.2% by the 22-week mark. Total company comparable sales in the four-week mark rose by 14.2% and by 14.8% at the 22-week time period. E-commerce grew by 9% in four weeks and by 13.6% in 22 weeks.

Lastly, the retailer shared that its comparable sales excluding the impacts from changes in gasoline prices and foreign exchange were 9.5% in four weeks and 10.4% in 22 weeks within the United States. 

Total company sales grew by 10.8% in four weeks and 10.5% in 22 weeks, and e-commerce increased by 9% in four weeks and 13.1% in 22 weeks as well.

Costco currently operates 828 warehouses, including 572 in the United States and Puerto Rico, 105 in Canada, 40 in Mexico, 30 in Japan, 29 in the United Kingdom, 16 in Korea, 14 in Taiwan, 13 in Australia, four in Spain, two each in France and China, and one in Iceland. Costco also operates e-commerce sites in the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and Australia.
