To yogurt, it’s all Greek
MINNEAPOLIS —Americans have embraced Greek yogurt, and more brands of the thick, creamy yogurt are being included in dairy cases. General Mills’ Yoplait brand is one of the latest—and more affordable—entries.
Yoplait’s Greek version is available in 6-oz. servings in four flavors: plain, honey vanilla, strawberry and blueberry. Each serving of Yoplait Greek contains 12 g of protein and 0 g of fat.
Yoplait is priced significantly below other products on the market. While some competing brands retail for $1.69, Yoplait Greek has a suggested retail price of $1.19. With a lower-priced option, even more consumers are likely to switch over to Greek yogurt.
Mintel: Consumer demand for sustainable food, drink grows
CHICAGO More than 13,000 new sustainable food and drink products have been tracked in the Mintel global new products database since 2005, and 84% of consumers said they regularly purchase such products, according to a new Mintel survey.
But while 84% of consumers stated their purchases of “green” or sustainable food and drink products are frequent, some of them are unaware of what such claims actually mean. According to the new survey:
- 40% of consumers polled have never heard of the solar/wind energy usage claim;
- 37% said they’ve never purchased food or drink bearing the claim;
- 32% of consumers have never heard of or seen a reduced carbon footprint/emissions claim; and
- 34% have never heard of a Fair Trade claim.
“Packaging claims such as ‘recyclable’ or ‘eco- or environmentally friendly’ are fairly well-known to consumers, but sustainable product claims, such as ‘solar/wind energy usage’ or ‘Fair Trade,’ have yet to enter the mainstream consumer consciousness,” said David Browne, senior analyst at Mintel. “They may have heard of the terms, but they’d be hard-pressed to define them.”
Despite being unaware that such product claims exist, 45% of sustainable food and drink users said they continue to buy these products because they believe sustainable products offer superior quality. What’s more, 43% of consumers purchase green products because they care about the environemnt, while another 42% said their purchases are motivated by their food safety concerns.
“These reasons vary in importance across different demographics. What’s most important to young adults may not be the primary deciding factor for affluent consumers,” Browne added. “Marketers should consider this in their claims closely; noting that health, welfare and safety are important for nearly all consumers.”
NACDS encourages members to use RollStream’s CEN to assure CPSIA compliance
ALEXANDRIA, Va. A group representing the nation’s chain pharmacies alerted retailers and manufacturers Thursday about a new rule, part of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, that requires tracking labels on certain products.
The National Association of Chain Drug Stores said that under the new CPSIA rule, which goes into effect March 1, 2011, packaged items –– including certain DVDs, video games, art materials, sporting goods and other products geared for children ages 12 years or younger –– may require tracking labels to be in compliance with CPSIA.
The legislation imposes new document-sharing requirements regarding product-safety-testing certificates on certain consumer products. The new rule follows the first round of implementations this past February.
In an effort to assist retailers and manufacturers to comply with the law, NACDS is encouraging its members to participate in the certificate exchange network developed by RollStream. The CEN provides retailers, manufacturers and distributors a single, online platform to exchange certificates of conformity. It enables manufacturers to directly post certificates to the online platform or provide a link to existing certificates of conformity that a manufacturer may store electronically elsewhere.
“The certificate exchange network has helped retailers and suppliers prepare for the implementation of the requirements of the CPSIA,” said NACDS president and CEO Steve Anderson. “NACDS urges retailers and manufacturers to utilize the CEN for the next round to help reduce the risks and minimize the costs associated with compliance.”
