BY Michael Johnsen

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Winn-Dixie Stores on Tuesday celebrated the completion of its sixth transformational store located at 3280 South Tamiami Trail in the Promenades Mall plaza in Port Charlotte. The state-of-the-art store offers guests solutions and service that makes shopping easier and fun, the company said.

“This newly transformed store exemplifies a renewed promise to our Port Charlotte neighbors and serves as a one-stop grocery destination catering to the needs, tastes and preferences of the surrounding community,” Winn-Dixie regional VP Randy Rambo said. “Port Charlotte guests are in for a shopping experience that is both fun and easy and we are excited to provide the surrounding neighborhood with exceptional service that exceeds all expectations.”

Past the greatly expanded produce department is an expansive new deli where experienced chefs direct preparation of the wide variety of foods and meal solutions that include made-to-order pasta and pizza, seven flavors of chicken wings, a barbecue bar and a carving station with fresh fish, prime rib and more. In addition, among other changes, a wine and gourmet cheese section staffed by knowledgeable specialists, a greatly enhanced meat and seafood department and an upgraded pharmacy add to the shopping experience.

In addition, the Port Charlotte Winn-Dixie store also features a new Wi-Fi Internet café and sitting area with complimentary coffee.

To celebrate the grand reopening, Winn-Dixie will host a series of celebrations throughout November including cooking demonstrations, food tastings, live entertainment, raffles and giveaways.

Free shipping a new incentive for Target loyalty program

BY Gail Hoffer

MINNEAPOLIS — Target shoppers have a new incentive for joining the retailer’s REDcard Rewards loyalty program: free shipping on Target.com.

What’s more, Target debit cards now can be used on Target.com, the company said.

“REDcard free shipping provides great value for our guests today and every day and it’s easy to understand — no minimum purchase requirement, no membership fee and available nationwide,” Target EVP merchandising Kathee Tesija said. “With the holiday season right around the corner, this new benefit makes it even more convenient for our guests to shop Target for great gifts and enjoy our great prices.”

Target’s REDcard Rewards loyalty program applies to the Target REDcards, including the Target credit card, Target Visa credit card and Target debit card.

Time will tell if the offer of free shipping may be enough to undo some of the damage caused by Target.com’s relaunch, which was slammed by critics.

Express Scripts amends Medco merger agreement; lowers termination fee

BY Michael Johnsen

ST. LOUIS — In an amendment dated Nov. 7 and filed to the Securities Exchange Commission on Tuesday, Express Scripts reduced its termination fee by 32% to $650 million. The termination fee is paid to one company when the other terminates the merger agreement.

The change was made to settle lawsuits against Medco accusing the company of selling itself too cheaply to Express Scripts, according to a research note by Bank of America Merrill Lynch analysts published on Tuesday, as reported by the New York Times. The lower fee may create more interest among rivals hoping to compete for Medco, the analysis concluded.
