Winn-Dixie to implement self-checkout technology

ARMONK, N.Y. — Winn-Dixie has selected IBM point-of-sale and self-checkout technology to help transform customer service, speed innovation and increase the operational efficiency of 484 Winn-Dixie store locations and other store formats across the southeastern United States, IBM reported.

According to an IBM press release, Winn-Dixie, working in collaboration with IBM and SAM Group, will implement a network of 6,000 IBM SurePOS 700 systems armed with IBM’s SurePOS ACE and Retail Integration Framework software, which are components of IBM’s Smarter Checkout solution. Winn-Dixie also will install IBM SurePoint infrared touch displays and SureMark thermal impact printers as part of its plan to create one the industry’s most comprehensive, flexible and robust retail shopping environments.

"This initiative will allow us to introduce services quickly and seamlessly to improve our guests’ shopping experience and will help to support our overall strategy," said Maura Hart, Winn-Dixie group VP and CIO. "We believe the functionality, reliability and open standards offered by IBM hardware and software will accelerate our innovation, which will enhance our competitiveness, as well as our ability to deliver quality service in our stores."

Clorox kicks off annual grant program for schools

OAKLAND, Calif. — Clorox on Wednesday commenced its annual Power A Bright Future grant program.

This year, however, the company said that Power A Bright Future will not only provide grants to select nominated schools nationwide, but the program also will leverage its first-ever educational initiative with Skype, underscoring the role of technology in schools and resources that are needed to power new programs. Through this initiative, Clorox said it is spreading the word about its school grants program, as well as connecting teachers, students and parents to engage them in a larger conversation about funding needs. Nominations will be accepted now through Oct. 17, Clorox said.

"These days technology is an important tool in education," Clorox associate public relations manager Molly Steinkrauss said. "We’re excited to leverage elements that many teachers, students and parents use to make Power A Bright Future even bigger this year and give more people the chance to win money for much needed programs. We recognize that the way to reach teens and engage parents and teachers is changing, and our program is a direct reflection of that."

Study: Higher conversion rate of omega-3 through supplements, not conventional food

MIAMI — Omega-3 sourced from dietary supplements may be more beneficial to a healthy diet than omega-3 sourced from conventional food, according to a new meta-analysis published in July by the Public Library of Science Genetics.

Across five population-based categories, representing more than 8,800 subjects, the PLoS has found a lower conversion rate from plant omega-3 (abbreviated ALA) to its final derivatives of EPA and DHA. EPA and DHA of omega-3 can be attained directly from dietary omega-3 supplements or through metabolic conversion from ALA, which is mostly found in seeds and plants.

The study found that the higher ratio of ALA in the body corresponded to lower levels of EPA and DHA, suggesting an inefficiency in conversion of ALA to EPA/DHA.
