Weis Markets highlights local produce in new campaign

SUNBURY, Pa. — Weis Markets is saluting the contribution of 13 farmers who supply its stores with local produce.

The Your Neighbors, Our Farmers local produce campaign includes individual black and white photos of each farmer/ supplier, as well as a group shot, which are displayed in Weis Markets’ produce departments by region and product. These photos also are displayed on billboards and in weekly circulars, Weis said.

The retailer said that in 2011, it plans to purchase more than 24 million lbs. of local produce from approximately 150 farmers in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey and New York.

"It is now peak season for local produce in our five state market area. For 99 years and counting, we’ve been purchasing and selling local produce because it offers the quality our customers have come to expect from us," Weis president and CEO David Hepfinger said. "It also helps us conserve resources and benefits the economies of the states where we operate. This year, we are proud to highlight the contributions of thirteen farmers and their families, some of whom have been supplying us for more than 40 years."

Sam’s Club to offer free vision screenings

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Sam’s Club is encouraging customers to protect their eyes by offering free vision screenings at its stores nationwide on Aug. 13.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., both adults and children can receive a vision acuity screening, as well as a quick take-home test called an Amsler Grid, which tests for blurred or missing areas of vision.

The screenings will be offered in Sam’s Club locations that have a pharmacy and/or optical centers. What’s more, the optical department is offering savings on eye health brands through Aug. 28. Additionally, members and guests can receive free samples of Zeiss lens wipes and Zeiss liquid eyeglass cleaner.

"Vision screenings are important preventative health measures for all ages to maintain eye health and preserve sight for years to come," Sam’s Club health-and-wellness SVP Jill Turner-Mitchael said. "Vision problems can start at any age and early detection is the key to good vision. With many adults and children preparing to focus on chalkboards and computer screens this fall, Sam’s Club is proud to offer free eye health screenings to benefit the communities we serve."

In addition to the vision screenings, the company also will offer free glucose tests. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes can cause blindness and more new cases of blindness are diagnosed among diabetes patients ages 20 to 74 years. The tests will not be offered in stores located in Hawaii, Maryland and Tennessee.

Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy names VP specialty infusion services

FLINT, Mich. — Hetty Lima has been tapped to serve as Diplomat Specialty Pharmacy’s VP specialty infusion services, the company announced this week.

In her new role, Lima will will be responsible for leading the sales and operations for Diplomat’s specialty infused product lines, including the national nursing network.

Lima, a 27-year industry veteran, served in various executive-level positions at such companies as Baxter Healthcare, CVS Caremark’s specialty pharmacy division and Coram’s Hemophilia Services division.

“Hetty’s years of specialty pharmacy and Orphan Disease experience will be invaluable to Diplomat as we build out our specialty infusion capabilities,” said Diplomat president and CEO Phil Hagerman said. “Her experience in biopharmaceutical product launch, business development and sales and marketing are a perfect fit for Diplomat’s rapid growth in the specialty pharmacy market.”
