Walgreens’ Way to Well blood-pressure test pledge could net AHA $100,000
DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Monday promised to donate $1 to the American Heart Association, up to $100,000, for each complimentary blood-pressure test conducted in February at a Walgreens pharmacy or Take Care Clinic. The push behind the initiatives is a part of Walgreens’ Way to Well Commitment, a four-year, $100 million commitment to disease prevention and to improving everyday health through education and early detection of today’s leading diseases, including cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
“Hypertension can be managed or controlled through early detection, which is why it’s so important for people to regularly have their blood pressure checked and monitored,” stated Kermit Crawford, Walgreens president of pharmacy, health and wellness. “Health tests are one of the many services our pharmacists and Take Care Clinic nurse practitioners and physician assistants offer while working to educate more people about simple, preventive steps to managing their health and helping them stay well.”
Tests are not done for diagnostic or treatment purposes, and individuals are advised to share their test results with their primary care physician.
Walgreens also offered free blood-pressure testing at all stores and Take Care Clinics throughout February 2011. During that time, more than 32,000 blood-pressure tests were conducted with more than 50% of those people testing out of the desired range.

Target to use pharmacy franchise model for its stores in Canada
MINNEAPOLIS — Target on Monday announced it will seek independent pharmacists to own and operate the pharmacies in its stores in Canada.
The chain said it will utilize a pharmacy franchise model for its stores north of the border, the first of which will open in March/April 2013. The strategy is different than in the United States, where Target operates its own in-store pharmacies.
"We have worked hard to understand the Canadian healthcare landscape and believe our unique pharmacy franchise model will greatly appeal to pharmacists while best serving the needs of patients in Canada,” Target Canada president Tony Fisher said.
Target said it created a best-in-class pharmacy franchise model specifically for the Canadian marketplace. In addition to meeting patients’ healthcare needs, the model provides pharmacists with a unique opportunity to own and grow a pharmacy business with no entry fees and the support of a national retailer.
Target said it will begin its search for pharmacist franchise owners in March 2012.

Crossmark forms Crossmark Drug and Value business unit
PLANO, Texas — Crossmark has added a new business unit to its sales agency.
The sales and marketing services company said Crossmark Drug and Value — a unit consisting of Crossmark MPG Drug and Crossmark Value — is dedicated to providing growth solutions for manufacturer and retailer clients in the drug and value channels.
In line with the formation of the unit, the company appointed Alex Yakulis to serve as VP, general manager.
“Crossmark will provide strategic headquarter and analytical support to assist clients in achieving their desired outcomes,” Yakulis said. “This will be complemented by retail merchandising support at more than 40,000 retail locations in these two channels.”
