Voxiva, PositiveID develop mobile diabetes management solution
WASHINGTON Two companies announced the integration of their respective programs to develop an end-to-end wireless diabetes management solution.
PositiveID and Voxiva said Monday that they would combine PositiveID’s wireless iGlucose system with Voxiva’s Care4Life diabetes management program, allowing diabetics to use mobile technology to capture glucose readings, receive instant feedback on results, monitor weight, cholesterol and other biomarkers, and have tailored education content based on their results delivered directly to their mobile phones. A personal health record also can be reviewed online and participants can use the solution to decide what data should be shared with their circle of care.
"Combining a mobile glucometer with content delivered through a mobile phone offers a simple, convenient and engaging way to improve diabetes management for millions of Americans," said Justin Sims, Voxiva’s CEO.
PositiveID’s iGlucose system simplifies diabetes management by automatically creating blood glucose logs and trend reports, while Voxiva’s Care4Life solution is a personalized, interactive mobile health service that uses text messaging, e-mail and a personalized Web portal to coach users on the steps they need to take to manage their diabetes, set and track progress toward their treatment goals and build a comprehensive record or diary that they can share with their physicians.
The companies will showcase together at the mHealth Summit in Washington, D.C., this week.
Maves to end leadership at AMA next June
CHICAGO The Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association and Michael Maves, AMA EVP and CEO, have mutually decided that Maves will complete his leadership of the AMA when his current contract ends June 30, 2011.
"Under Dr. Maves’ leadership, the American Medical Association restored its financial stability, weathered the recession and implemented a number of critical initiatives to improve quality of care, increase access to care and establish a fair system of payment for physicians within the Medicare program,” stated Ardis Hoven, AMA chairman. "As we enter into a new era that is redefining the way health care is delivered, both Maves and the board of trustees share the belief that new top leadership is required to address these challenges and to ensure the rights of patients and physicians are passionately and effectively protected."
During his tenure, Maves led important multi-association efforts, such as the "Scope of Practice Partnership," a coalition of national medical specialty organizations and state medical societies established by the AMA to clarify the roles and capabilities of nonphysician healthcare providers.
The AMA board will engage an executive search firm to identify the next physician executive to lead the AMA and expects a new EVP/CEO to be in place by the conclusion of Maves’ contract. In the interim, Bernard Hengesbaugh, AMA COO, will partner with Maves to ensure a seamless transition. No additional executive changes are expected.
Maves has served as the AMA chief executive since 2001. Prior to AMA, Maves was president for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association.
Lansinoh launches breast-feeding education website for healthcare providers
ALEXANDRIA, Va. Lansinoh Labs on Thursday went live with its new online portal, called "Lansinoh Professional" (LansinohProfessional.com), that will provide International board-certified lactation consultants, registered nurses, midwives, doulas, OB/GYNs and other healthcare providers with the resources they need to better educate and support breast-feeding moms.

The new portal, also accessible via Lansinoh’s homepage, offers a number of resources to better equip lactation professionals and other healthcare professionals with the tools to respond to their patients’ questions and needs, including:
- Breast-feeding 101 for the pregnant and new mom, featuring such information as checklists to prepare for breast-feeding before giving birth, breast-feeding myths vs. facts, what to expect, benefits of breast-feeding and tips for getting dads involved;
- Upcoming national and local events for lactation professionals and healthcare providers where Lansinoh will have a presence through support, donations and exhibits;
- Tips from Lansinoh breast-feeding educators about pumping and storage;
- Details, including research-based evidence, on the efficacy and safety of Lansinoh products;
- How-to videos illustrating breast-feeding techniques and product use;
- Comprehensive resources list for professionals and moms; and
- Featured breast-feeding news and advice from the Lansinoh-sponsored blog, ByMomsForMoms, Facebook page and Twitter page.
Beginning later this year, professionals will be able to order samples of Lansinoh products directly through Lansinoh Professional.
