Turnaround efforts continue to generate ‘positive momentum,’ Fred’s says

BY Michael Johnsen

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fred’s on Friday posted a sales decline of 4.2% to $153 million for the four-week fiscal month ended Aug. 26. The decrease in total sales is related primarily to the closure of 39 underperforming stores in the first quarter, the company reported.

Total comparable store sales for the month saw a slight decrease of 0.5%, compared with a 3% decrease in comparable sales in the prior year period. Comparable store sales for August were negatively impacted by the continued increase in generic dispensing rate as well as a 0.5% impact from the sale of low productive discontinued inventory versus August of last year.

“Total comparable store sales for August show continued improvement from trends over the past 12 months, and overall pharmacy comps remained positive in August," stated Michael Bloom, CEO Fred's. "Front store showed positive comp growth in our general merchandise, health care and beauty categories, which were offset by market headwinds in the core consumables categories. We are encouraged by the momentum resulting from the turnaround efforts that are under way.”

P&G updates Charmin restroom finder app

BY Michael Johnsen

CINCINNATI — With millions of people expected to travel this Labor Day weekend, Procter & Gamble has released a new version of its Charmin SitOrSquat restroom finder mobile app. The popular travel app helps people find clean public restrooms based on user-generated ratings and reviews.

“Not knowing where to turn when nature calls while on a road trip or family vacation can be stressful," stated Janette Yauch, associate brand director, Charmin. "We know not all restrooms are created equal and understand the importance of a better bathroom experience when you have to go. The recent updates made to the SitOrSquat app make it easier than ever to quickly locate clean public restrooms so you can enjoy the go while on the go.”

The new Charmin SitOrSquat app now has more than 100,000 public bathrooms for people to search and find a clean place to go. Users can upload photos of clean seats into their reviews, and a new mapping and clustering feature makes it easier for people to locate bathrooms based on their location.

Travelers can visit the App Store, search Charmin SitOrSquat and follow the directions to download it for free.

Aurobindo Pharma USA regularly works closely with organizations to provide a wide ranging breadth of generic medicines for those in need. The organizations provide substantive care and medicines to the indigent, the poor, and those without means, to cite a few groups. Hurricane Harvey has intensified the giving; Aurobindo is working closely with the Dispensary of Hope (and others), sending generic medicines to Houston, Corpus Christi, and many of the surrounding towns. These actions are consistent with our core values- caring for people.
