Survey: Most online retailers will host promotions on Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday
WASHINGTON — Online retailers this year are putting a heavy emphasis on promotions during the Thanksgiving holiday through Cyber Monday, according to a new Shop.org survey.
The survey, conducted by BIGresearch, found that more than half of online retailers (51%) will offer promotions on Thanksgiving, while nearly 8-out-of-10 (78.4%) will offer Cyber Monday promotions. Overall, 92.2% will offer special promotions at some point during the Thanksgiving weekend. In regards to what type of promotions they will offer, 45% of online retailers will offer coupons and percent off deals, while 37.5% will host limited-time promotions, 30% will offer free standard shipping with conditions and 15% will feature a free gift with their purchase.
"As a direct result of increased demand, online retailers will offer hard-to-pass-up deals to shoppers all season long – before, on and after Cyber Monday," Shop.org executive director Vicki Cantrell said. "In addition to many free shipping promotions, there will be plenty of extra ways to save on Cyber Monday, including percentages off entire sites and online-only sales."
ShopperTrak: Expect to see boost in foot traffic on Dec. 26
CHICAGO — A late Christmas gift may be in the works for retailers, according to new research from ShopperTrak.
According to the company, the day after Christmas (Dec. 26), is expected to experience an increase in foot traffic, with up to 60% more shoppers. The day after Christmas will rank third in foot traffic for the holiday shopping season, surpassed by Black Friday and Super Saturday, the Saturday one week before Christmas. This is great news for retailers, ShopperTrak said, as national foot traffic has been steadily falling since 2005.
“Dec. 26 is a very important shopping day, as shoppers return unwanted gift items and shop for marked-down merchandise,” ShopperTrak cofounder Bill Martin said. “If retailers depend on last year’s shopper turnout and behavior as a guide for staffing and inventory plans, they will lose out on business this year. Dec. 26 is going to be a door-buster day.”
