Supervalu sales down as company goes through ‘transitioning’ period

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu posted sales of $3.89 billion and a loss of $1.41 billion in fourth quarter 2013, the company said Wednesday.

That result compared with sales of $3.98 billion and a loss of $424 million in fourth quarter 2012.

For the fiscal year, sales were $17.1 billion, compared with $17.3 billion in fiscal year 2012, while the company incurred a loss of $1.46 billion, compared with a $1.04 billion loss the year before.

"This past quarter was largely about transitioning the company for the future, and I am proud of the many things we accomplished in my first 60 days," Supervalu president and CEO Sam Duncan said. "I brought in Ritchie Casteel as Save-A-Lot’s new president and CEO, and he has already right-sized that organization’s overhead and, along with me, met with a number of licensees to understand what we can do to help drive sales and improve the overall operating model."

Retail food sales for the quarter were $1.09 billion, compared with $1.14 billion last year, while Save-A-Lot had sales of $969 million, compared with $984 million last year. The company’s independent business had sales of $1.83 billion, compared with $1.86 billion in fourth quarter 2012.

NACDS presents lifetime achievement awards at Annual Meeting closing ceremony

Palm Beach, Fl — NACDS Annual Meeting concluded here, Tuesday night, with the Board of Directors Dinner and the annual presentation of the industry’s lifetime achievement award.

Renamed the Sheldon W. Fantle Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996 in honor of People’s Drug Stores’ Bud Fantle, the award was originally established in 1989 to recognize exceptional accomplishments and contributions to the industry.

Receiving the award this year were Bob Loeffler, former CEO of H-E-B and past NACDS chairman, and Chain Drug Review editor David Pinto.

“Our honoree exemplifies that hard work, dedication and leadership can make a real difference within a company. From his upbringing in a small town to assuming the President’s position in his company, tonight’s recipient worked diligently to develop a career and life of significance,” noted Bob Narveson, chairman of the Board of NACDS and president and president and CEO of Thrifty White Pharmacy, who presented the award to Loeffler. “[He is] also recognized one’s obligation to serve the community and is active in various civic and charitable endeavors. He is a man dedicated to action, his family and making a difference for others. He is detail oriented and has a keen financial eye. He is a tough competitor and was responsible for his company operating some of the best run stores in our industry.”


Tony Civello, president and CEO of Kerr Drug, Inc. and a past chairman of NACDS, noted, “He uses words, rolls-up his sleeves and even swings an elbow now and again,” in his presentation to CDR’s Pinto.

During the event, NACDS also paid tribute to Sam Skaggs, American Stores. Skaggs, the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, died in March.



Four past recipients of the Fantle Award attended the ceremony Tuesday evening, including Jack Futterman, Supermarkets General (1997), Jerry Heller, May’s Drug Stores (2003), Robert Kwait, Kwait & Associates (2005) and Morry Weiss, American Greetings (2006). Nancy Ziegler, wife of the late Ron Ziegler, NACDS president and CEO from 1988 to 1999, also was in attendance.

Twenty percent of consumers visit stores after receiving geo-targeted notifications of deals

WHITING, Ind. — Notice of nearby savings could bring smartphone owners into stores, according to a new survey.

CouponCabin released results of a survey Wednesday finding that 20% of smartphone owners have visited a store after receiving notification that specials, coupons or deals were available nearby. The online survey, conducted between Feb. 28 and March 4, polled 2,219 adults, including 1,096 smartphone owners.

The survey focused on geo-targeted savings alerts that prompt users to visit stores nearby with specials, coupons and deals and are a new feature from CouponCabin’s mobile app for the iPhone and iPad. The alerts are based on the smartphone’s GPS capability. Sixty-seven percent of respondents who owned smartphones said they would be at least somewhat interested in a mobile app that allows them to receive notifications for geo-targeted coupons.

"Our new mobile app puts even more savings power into our users’ hands," CouponCabin senior savings adviser Jackie Warrick said. "Now during their daily routine, people can be alerted simply and easily when they can save money around them."
