Stater Bros. acquires two Albertsons stores

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Stater Bros. has entered an agreement to purchase two stores from Albertsons in Lake Elsinore and Hesperia, Calif.

Stater Bros. said it expects to take possession of the locations from Albertsons, a Supervalu subsidiary, in mid-May. The California-based supermarket chain also said that the stores would receive several upgrades, including wider aisles; expanded and new full-service departments; and energy-efficient refrigeration, skylights and recycling centers.

"The Stater Bros. supermarket family is very proud to provide this greatly enhanced and larger Stater Bros. supermarket to better serve our long-time and ‘valued’ [Lake Elsinore and Hesperia] customers," said Jack Brown, Stater Bros. chairman and CEO.

Target makes donation to Save the Children

MINNEAPOLIS — Target has made a donation to Save the Children to assist with Japan’s earthquake and tsunami relief efforts.

The retailer said it has donated $500,000 to the cause.

Target said it encourages shoppers and team members to visit the Save the Children website to learn more about how they can help victims of the earthquake and tsunami.

Will paperless receipts become the norm?

NEW YORK — After Apple began giving consumers the option to receive paperless receipts, it seems that other retailers are following suit, according to published reports.

While it’s common knowledge that cutting back on the use of paper has a positive impact on the environment, eco-conscious consumers that would prefer to receive their receipts electronically (via e-mail) now may have more options.

A new report by the Boston Herald said many retailers already have opted in to use a paperless option. The report noted that some retailers, including Whole Foods and many apparel retailers, have tapped such software makers as Intuit, the developer of Quick Receipts, to provide customers with a more environmentally friendly option to keep a record of their purchases.

“It’s the next big thing in retail,” Richard Mader, executive director of the Association for Retail Technology Standards, a division of the National Retail Federation, said. “In five years, up to 60% of retailers will go paperless.”
