St. Paul introduces dietary supplement to help skin

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. St. Paul Brands, a division of Affordable Quality Pharmaceuticals, has introduced R.G. (Red Gac) Skin Revitalizer, a dietary supplement for the skin.

Rich in carotenoid antioxidants, R.G. Skin Revitalizer comes in soft capsule form and is taken as part of one’s daily diet, essentially providing skin daily nourishment that works from the inside out to complement topical applications, the company stated.

“Gac fruit is an exceptional source of beta-carotene, lycopene and long-chain fatty acids,” stated Tracy Nguyen, Vietnam native and founder of St. Paul Brands. “It has 10 times more beta-carotene than carrots and 70 times more lycopene than tomatoes.” Beta-carotene, a natural carotenoid antioxidant found abundantly in Gac fruit, helps boost the immune system, assists the skin’s cellular rejuvenation process, and supports the structural integrity of the tissues.

Carotenoids, as plant pigments, function as protection of the plant against excess sunlight, according to the company.

R.G. Skin Revitalizer is packaged in bottles of 30 gelatin capsules and has a suggested retail price of $44.99.

VO5 gets image facelift

MELROSE PARK, Ill. Extreme Style by VO5, an iconic 50-plus year old brand, is looking to reinvent itself and reach today’s younger consumer through a new Web site, print and television ad campaigns, a celebrity stylist and new packaging.

“We are shifting our focus to how hair can define individuality. Just as today’s young generation exemplifies a fresh new direction in life, VO5 begins its journey of changing the way we communicate to this highly eclectic group of influencers,” stated Robert Keen, Alberto VO5 marketing director.

Looking to spread the word online, the brand has launched the new VO5.com site where visitors can upload a photo and virtually change their look instantly. Visitors also can participate in the Ultimate Flirting Championship, where they create an avatar and work their best pick up lines live on virtual singles nationwide.

The brand is also sponsoring this year’s MySpace Concert Tour featuring artists Hellogoodbye and Polysics.

Meanwhile, the brand launched in the fall new print ads and television spots. The 30-second spots, created by Element 79, are airing on such cable stations as MTV, VH1 and FUSE and speak to a dual gender audience.

To serve as a voice for the brand, VO5 has enlisted the expertise of celebrity hair stylist Erin Anderson. It is also partnering with VH1 to be the official hairstyling product of the new reality show “America’s Most Smartest Model.”

The new Extreme Style by VO5 line includes Weightless Volumizing Mousse, Curvaceous Curls Volumizing Mousse, Max Hold Hairspray, Volume Blast Styling Spray, Ultimate Hold Power Gel and Reworkable Putty.

FDA seizes discontinued unapproved cosmetic eyelash enhancement

WASHINGTON The Food and Drug Administration has announced that nearly 13,000 tubes of Age Intervention Eyelash have been seized because the product may, in some users, lead to decreased vision.

According to the FDA, Age Intervention Eyelash, sold and distributed by San Jose, Calif.-based Jan Marini Skin Research, is considered an unapproved and misbranded drug because it is promoted to increase eyelash growth. Before a new drug product may be legally marketed, it must be shown to be safe and effective, and approved by the FDA.

Authorities also consider the seized product, valued at about $2 million, to be an adulterated cosmetic. The product contains bimatoprost, an active ingredient in an FDA-approved drug to treat elevated pressure inside the eye.

For patients already using the prescription medication, the cosmetic product may increase the risk of optic nerve damage because the extra dose of bimatoprost may decrease the prescription drug’s effectiveness, the FDA stated. Damage to the optic nerve may lead to decreased vision and possibly blindness.

In addition, using the product may cause other adverse effects in certain people due to the bimatoprost, including macular edema, or swelling of the retina, and uveitis, or inflammation of the eye, which may lead to decreased vision.

Jan Marini Skin Research notified the FDA that it ceased manufacturing and shipping any Age Intervention Eyelash product containing bimatoprost last year.

The FDA is urging consumers, dermatologists and estheticians who may still have Age Intervention Eyelash to stop using it and discard any remaining product. The FDA also recommends that consumers consult their health care provider if they have experienced any adverse events that they suspect are related to the product’s use.
