Sears Holdings offers local deals, products through loyalty program website

BY Alaric DeArment

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Sears and Kmart are going local on the web.

Parent company Sears Holdings said that employees and members of the retailer’s Shop Your Way loyalty program would be uploading photos and providing information about sales from local Kmart and Sears sales in cities across the country.

"We are steering two of America’s most storied brands to a new era when people have fundamentally different expectations about how they shop and are looking for ways to build relationships with their local stores both physically and online," Sears Holdings SVP customer experience and integrated retail Leena Munjal said. "As we become a more member-centric organization, we are connecting associates and Shop Your Way members on a local level to products and exclusive shopping perks that make shopping fun."

Members of the loyalty program can look at what their local stores have to offer through the ShopYourWay.com website.

Kroger makes $150 million capital commitment to Dallas-Fort Worth market

BY Michael Johnsen

DALLAS — Kroger, already the market share leader among traditional grocers in Dallas-Fort Worth, is expanding its presence in one of the largest metropolitan regions in the United States, the company announced Friday. Over the next 24 months, Kroger will invest $150 million in North Texas to build five new Marketplace stores and to expand three locations, along with opening multiple fuel centers and remodeling existing properties.

"Kroger is a company that is focused on smart, strategic growth and providing a highly-satisfied customer shopping experience," stated Bill Breetz, president Kroger Southwest. "Dallas is a market that continues to attract new residents and retailers because of its economic strength and stability," he said. "We’ve operated here since 1958. In that period, we’ve grown our footprint to 85 stores and 43 fuel centers. We’ve successfully reached this point by closely monitoring the unique needs of this market and evolving to meet the requests of our customers."

The Kroger Southwest Division operates 211 stores, 201 pharmacies and 116 fuel centers in Texas and Louisiana.

Kmart’s decision to open Thanksgiving morning sparks consumer backlash

BY Alaric DeArment

NEW YORK — From Sears Holdings’ perspective, opening Kmart stores on the morning of Thanksgiving gives customers a convenient way to shop for holiday gifts. But many customers see things differently, and the retail giant is taking some flak for the decision.

Since the announcement Monday that Kmart stores would open at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving and remain open until 11 p.m. on Black Friday, the retailer’s Facebook page has been flooded with critical comments from users, saying that opening on Thanksgiving deprives employees of the ability to spend the holiday with their families. Sears stores will also open on Thanksgiving, but not until 8 p.m.

"I am a loyal Kmart customer. In fact, I drive past Target to go to Kmart. That will change now that Kmart will be open on Thanksgiving. You will be responsible for turning Thanksgiving into just another day instead of the hallowed American day on which our nation gives thanks … Good bye Kmart," wrote Sarah Scova Klug in a comment on a post from the retailer advertising its Personal Shopper service for members of the Shop Your Way loyalty program.

Kmart has responded to the negative reaction by saying it will staff stores with volunteers and seasonal employees whenever possible, though according to the Huffington Post, an employee of the retailer in the Chicago area posted a photograph of a flier at the store saying that no requests for time off would be given for Nov. 27-29 or Dec. 22-24.

The employee that submitted the picture is right, there is no such thing as volunteers and seasonal employees to only work during holidays. Signs are really posted for employees to see and to restrain from requesting time off during the dates specified. Other then that schedules are done in advance and employees are expected to follow them. Very sad, but true.
