Samuel Adams introduces 10th anniversary batch of barrel-aged Utopias beer

BY Melissa Valliant

BOSTON — Samuel Adams has once again stepped into the realm of "extreme beers" with its latest 10th anniversary release of Samuel Adams Utopias, the brewery’s legendary barrel-aged beer. Aged to perfection — for some ingredients, 20 years — the new brew contains slightly more than 29% alcohol by volume, which compares with 5% ABV in Samuel Adams Boston Lager.

The Utopias batch offers notes of vanilla and maple from its being aged in hand-selected, single-use bourbon casks from the Buffalo Trace Distillery, and a variety of finishing casks add dark fruit aromas and flavors of fig, chocolate, raisin, vanilla and some spice. The limited-edition beer was brewed with Samuel Adams’ traditional techniques and acquired its distinct hop character from the finest Noble hops. A combination of yeast strains were used during fermentation, including one usually reserved for Champagne.

"With this year’s 10th-anniversary release, we’re unveiling the result of complex and carefully timed brewing and aging techniques. In fact, this year’s brew is a blend of batches — including some of our original Triple Bock, whose development began in 1992 — and then aged in other barrels sourced from all over the world," said Jim Koch, founder and brewer of Samuel Adams. "This release of Samuel Adams Utopias is proof — 58-proof to be exact — that extreme beers have earned a permanent and respected place in the beer universe, a world now constantly evolving with new craft brewers and excited craft beer drinkers. I hope drinkers will enjoy savoring Samuel Adams Utopias as much as I enjoyed crafting this beer over the past 10 years."

Samuel Adams Utopias beer is bottled in a unique 10th anniversary black decanter shaped like a brew kettle. The company produced fewer than 15,000 bottles of the beer due to the long aging required. It’s available at select beer and liquor stores beginning this month for a suggested retail price of $190 per bottle.

Quest Nutrition launches high-protein peanut butter cups

BY Michael Johnsen

LOS ANGELES — Quest Nutrition on Tuesday launched Quest Cravings Peanut Butter Cups, a high-protein chocolate candy with 20 g of protein per serving.

The peanut butter cups are made with non-Dutch processed 100% chocolate rich in amino acids, containing no soy, trans fats or sugar. Suggested retail price is $27.99 for a box of 12 packages, with two cups per package.

In September, Quest Nutrition introduced the Cravings line exclusively to Facebook fans.

"People love to eat. It’s fun. It’s satisfying. It’s social. But much of what we love to eat is terrible for us," stated Tom Bilyeu, Quest Nutrition president. "That’s why we worked so hard to develop Quest Cravings Peanut Butter Cups … People no longer have to choose between delicious and healthy."

Novamex launches first natural, sparkling aloe vera beverage

BY Rebecca Haughey

EL PASO, TEXAS – Novamex, producer and marketer for such Mexican brands as Jarritos premium Mexican soda, on Thursday announced that it has launched Alova — the first natural, sparkling aloe vera beverage.

Alova will be available in three flavors: Cucumber/Mint, Mandarin Orange and Grapefruit. Each bottle contains 70-80 calories and all natural ingredients, real sugar, no preservatives and no artificial flavors.

Alova is lightly carbonated and smooth with a subtle taste, unlike the pulpy, highly sweetened formulas found in most traditional aloe vera beverages. The new beverage contains 15% organic aloe vera juice extracted from plants grown on a company-owned farm in Campeche, Mexico.

"We have developed an expertise in manufacturing great-tasting, naturally flavored sodas. Alova expands our product portfolio, enabling us to reach new consumers via new retail channels. Alova targets consumers who want unique, natural and organic-based products,” said Ramon Carrasco, chief operating officer for Novamex.

Novamex has entered into a partnership with The Fresh Market to be the exclusive retailer for the Alova line featured in all of their 127 stores in 25 states. Packaged in a 330mL glass bottle, Alova will be sold individually and comes packaged in 24-bottle cases.
