Sam’s Club to offer free thyroid health tests for women

BY Alaric DeArment

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Mass merchandiser Sam’s Club is offering a free women’s health screening in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the chain said Tuesday.

Sam’s Club pharmacies will offer all women, including members and nonmembers, free thyroid health tests on Oct. 8 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., including the TSH test for thyroid disorders, blood pressure and body mass index tests. Thyroid disease affects millions of people in the United States — mostly women — and is often a symptom of other health issues and can lead to serious conditions, such as cancer and infertility.

"The estimated number of people with undiagnosed thyroid disease may be 10%," Sam’s Club SVP health and wellness Jill Turner-Mitchael said. "A woman faces as high as a 1-in-5 chance of developing thyroid problems during her lifetime, and that risk increases with age and for those with a family history of thyroid problems."

Castro-Wright retirement opens door for new social commerce leadership

BY Gail Hoffer

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Wal-Mart Stores is in search of a new head of its global e-commerce and global sourcing businesses, now that Eduardo Castro-Wright announced his retirement effective July 1, 2012. Walmart said it intends to name new leadership for these businesses by the end of January, after which Castro-Wright will assist in the transition.

In his role as vice chairman and CEO of global e-commerce and global sourcing, Castro-Wright, 56, has been instrumental in developing Walmart’s social and mobile commerce business, which included the development of @WalmartLabs through the acquisition of Kosmix, a technology platform that searches and analyzes connections in real-time data streams to deliver highly personalized insights to users.

In order to continue the momentum of its social commerce venture, Walmart will have to choose Castro-Wright’s replacement carefully. As editor Mike Troy opined in an article on the Kosmix deal, "Say what you will about Castro-Wright, and plenty have, the guy gets things done and could be exactly what Walmart needs to bring a sense of urgency to the development of Walmart’s multichannel capabilities."

Castro-Wright joined Walmart in 2001 as president and COO of Walmart Mexico and was promoted to president and CEO of that business in 2003. He also served as COO for a short period until being named president and CEO of Walmart U.S. in 2005. He was promoted to vice chairman in 2008 and assumed his current responsibilities in August of last year.

"Eduardo has made many contributions at Walmart, beginning in Mexico and continuing until today," Walmart CEO Mike Duke said. "He has been a strong advocate for our customers and in every assignment has brought passion and commitment to the job. He has also built talented teams wherever he has led."

Soft & Shield enters market

BY Allison Cerra

HACKENSACK, N.J. — Napp Technologies has introduced its Soft & Shield moisturizing sanitizer.

Soft & Shield is a nontoxic, scented moisturizing lotion that serves as an invisible protective glove over the hands. Soft & Shield provides at least four hours of protection and kills 99.99% of harmful germs and bacteria, Napp Technologies said.

"We’ve invented a novel lotion that not only disinfects and moisturizes the hands, but also keeps the germs away for most of the working day," Napp Technologies COO Sheldon Wexler said. "No longer do people need to keep reapplying alcohol-based sanitizers, which have a short and limited effect, often resulting in red, irritated skin with repeated use."

Napp Technologies said that there are approximately 100 independent pharmacies stocked with Soft & Shield for the 2011 flu season, and it also has been made available at smaller retail chains.
