Retail pharmacy again steps to the plate as the South recovers from the latest hurricane

NEW YORK — Recent hurricane relief efforts have expanded to incorporate the aftermath of Hurricane Irma in Florida and neighboring southern states as retail pharmacy operators continue to provide support to the associates and customers impacted by floods and power outages.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, Walgreens on Wednesday committed to a $200,000 donation to American Red Cross Hurricane Irma relief efforts and also is donating supplies of water and food to relief efforts in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

“As recovery efforts move forward, our focus is on supporting our customers and employees who live in the many communities we serve that were impacted by the storm,” stated Richard Ashworth, Walgreens president of pharmacy and retail operations. “The generosity of people throughout the country who participate in our fundraising for relief efforts will be appreciated more than they know by the people in need.”

More than 700 out of approximately 830 Walgreens stores in Florida have reopened, and all of Walgreens South Carolina drugstores that were temporarily closed are now open. Walgreens also has restored operations in nearly all of its Georgia and Puerto Rico locations that had closed due to the storm.

Also, CVS Pharmacy and CVS Caremark, CVS Health's pharmacy benefit management business, have activated a process that allows pharmacists to provide one-time emergency refills of a 10-day supply of medication for plan members in areas impacted by Hurricane Irma.

In addition, CVS Health, its customers and colleagues, and the CVS Health Foundation donated more than $400,000 in cash and in-kind donations in response to Hurricane Harvey, for a total to date of more than $525,000 in collective commitment related to the two storms.

Florida mainstay Publix Super Markets has also established a program to offer its customers and associates a way to directly assist those areas affected by Hurricane Irma.

“Our Publix family has been severely affected by this storm, but helping our associates, customers and communities is fundamental to who we are,” said Maria Brous, director of media and community relations. “We will rebuild together and support each other in the coming weeks and months.”

Additionally, Publix Super Markets Charities is donating in total $1 million to the American Red Cross and United Way for relief efforts for the affected areas.

And Harris Teeter is distributing free water and ice to customers affected by the recent inclement weather as long as supplies last.

Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobiles set to tour Midwest

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Seven of Hy-Vee Healthy You Mobiles will visit Hy-Vee stores and health and fitness events in 15 Midwest cities during the month of September, the retailer announced Thursday.

In-store registered dietitians will be at each event, providing attendees with the opportunity to meet their local Hy-Vee health and wellness team.

Additionally, dietitians will be sampling from the all-natural sports nutrition line Performance Inspired. Performance Inspired was created by actor Mark Wahlberg. The product line launched in March 2017 at Hy-Vee stores across the company’s eight-state region.

Target partners with Kaiser Permanente on 31 Southern California clinics

PASADENA, Calif. — Target is bringing shoppers in 31 of its Southern California stores clinics staffed and operated by Kaiser Permanente. The companies announced the planned retail clinics Thursday, whose expansion builds on an existing collaboration they launched in 2014.

Currently, there are four Kaiser Permanente-staffed Target Clinics in southern California, with four set to open in November — two in San Diego, one in Orange County and one in Riverside —with the rest set to open in existing stores over the next three years.

"From annual flu shots to care for a child's sore throat, guests in our four pilot stores have told us they appreciate having access to high-quality health care services from Kaiser Permanente during their Target run,” Target senior director of wellness Steve Lafferty said. “Expanding the number of Target Clinic locations makes these offerings available to even more Southern California guests, and gives Kaiser Permanente members additional reasons to choose Target's easy, convenient and inspiring shopping experience.”

MinuteClinic has been providing Kaiser Permanente administrative services in support of the existing Target clinics, and it will provide the same services to the new ones when they open. After a clinic visit, Kaiser Permanente patients can receive a one-time fill at the CVS Pharmacy co-located to the Target Clinic.

"CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic are pleased to play a role in this unique health care relationship," MinuteClinic SVP executive director Sharon Vitti said. "Both CVS Pharmacy and MinuteClinic have a proven track record of delivering top-notch care to patients and we look forward to serving the pharmacy needs of Southern California residents through our presence in Target stores."

The clinics will be branded “Target Clinic, care provided by Kaiser Permanente” and be staffed by licensed nurse practitioners and vocational nurses, with physicians available for telemedicine consultations. It will offer such services as pediatric care, women’s health care, chronic disease monitoring and care, basic dermatology services and treatment for such minor illnesses as strep throat, vaccinations, sinus pain, earaches, asthma and cold and flu.

"This is the evolution of a successful relationship that is focused on quality and convenience," Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals president for the Southern California region Julie Miller-Phipps said. "We are proud to expand our existing efforts to bring affordable, quality health care to even more Target guests throughout Southern California."
