Report: ‘Refuse and refer’ policy may be codified in Washington state

BY Michael Johnsen

SEATTLE The Washington Board of Pharmacy has initiated a rule-change process that would require pharmacists who can’t fill a particular prescription to actively help patients find a drug store that does carry the medication, according to a story published in the Seattle Times on Tuesday.

The initiative would codify its policy around the dual status (prescription/nonprescription) emergency contraceptive Plan B, called “refuse and refer,” where pharmacists uncomfortable dispensing Plan B refer patients to a pharmacist who will dispense the medication.

“The wording of the proposed amendment has not yet been determined, and the rule-making process will include public comments,” the Times reported.
