CRN names new board members for 2013

BY Michael Johnsen

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Thursday announced that John Blair, SVP of NSA, has been named chair of the association’s board of directors. Blair, who will hold the chairmanship through 2014, succeeds Jim Hamilton, president of DSM Nutritional Products, USA.

Blair, in 1992, spearheaded NSA’s decision to enter the nutrition field, based on NSA’s Juice Plus concept. During his time at NSA, Blair managed the development of the global manufacturing team that produces the entire Juice Plus line and managed the worldwide clinical research effort for the product line. "His knowledge of the health and wellness industry makes him a valuable provider to CRN," CRN stated in a press release. "He has served on the board most recently as chair elect, and was the conference chair of CRN’s 2012 Annual Conference."

“Our industry will continue to face challenges over the course of the next two years, but we’re prepared for them and this industry is positioned like never before for strong growth,” Blair said. “Moving forward in 2013, we’ll work to educate the 113th Congress on health benefits that dietary supplements provide and how they are regulated; we’ll challenge the industry to ensure complete compliance with the laws and regulations already in place; and we’ll be zealous advocates on behalf of our members to promote a commercial marketplace and a regulatory framework supported by sound science.”

CRN’s board also elected a lineup of new officers to serve along with Blair during his two-year term: chair elect — Harvey Kamil, NBTY; treasurer — Debbie Trinker, Kemin Health; secretary — Kristen Blanchard, Nutramax Laboratories; and immediate past chair—Jim Hamilton, DSM Nutritional Products. Steve Mister, CRN president and CEO, will continue to serve as a board officer.

Separately, CRN’s membership has elected the new board of Directors for 2013. Michael Bentley, SierraSil Health; Paul Dijkstra, InterHealth Nutraceuticals; and Paul Faganel, Embria Health Sciences, were newly elected to serve on the board.  Carl Hastings, Reliv International and Vic Neufeld, Jamieson Laboratories were re-elected for a second three-year term.

Medela launches Calma breastmilk feeding system into mass, specialty

BY Michael Johnsen

MCHENRY, Ill. — The Calma breastmilk feeding system from Medela, which helps emulate the breastfeeding experience for babies, is now available in major national retail stores, Medela announced Thursday. Calma is a research-based nipple used with a BPA-free breastmilk bottle, designed to help babies maintain their natural feeding behavior and transition from bottle back to breast with ease.

With Calma, breastmilk flows when babies create a vacuum so they can feed, pause and breathe — which mimics their feeding behavior at the breast. As a result, Calma’s unique vacuum technology allows mothers to provide pumped breastmilk to their babies, and easily transition babies back to feeding at the breast.

"The same Calma nipple can be used throughout the entire feeding experience since baby controls the flow," stated Carolin Archibald, president of Medela. "With Calma more conveniently available, it’s easier for moms to take advantage of this latest advancement in breastmilk feeding."

Calma is now available in three retail chains around the country — Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby and Target — in addition to juvenile specialty stores and online retailers.
