PL Developments to sell, distribute store-brand generic Zegerid OTC

BY Michael Johnsen

WESTBURY, N.Y. — PL Developments on Monday announced that it has acquired the exclusive rights to sell and distribute store-brand over-the-counter versions of omeprazole sodium bicarbonate capsules, the generic version of Merck’s Zegerid OTC.

Par Pharmaceutical currently has approval for the prescription product and has filed for the OTC version. Upon FDA approval and upon favorable resolution of intellectual property litigation, PL Developments will begin marketing the new store-brand proton-pump inhibitor, the company stated.

Merck received approval for the Rx-to-OTC switch of this drug in late 2009 and launched it in March 2010. As a prescription, Zegerid had annual sales of approximately $218 million in 2009. Zegerid OTC is forecasted to reach sales of $100 million by 2012, according to data provided by IMS Health, PL Developments reported.

Store-brand sales within the gastrointestinal category grew 11.9%, outpacing national brand growth by 8.7%, PL Developments added, citing SymphonyIRI Group data for the 52 weeks ended in January.

USDA features Purell product as BioPreferred

BY Michael Johnsen

AKRON, Ohio — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has chosen Purell green certified instant hand sanitizer foam as a featured product for the formal launch of its new BioPreferred label program.

USDA deputy secretary Kathleen Merrigan made the announcement Thursday at a biobased product meeting in Glenwillow, Ohio.

The USDA BioPreferred program promotes the purchase of biobased products that help reduce petroleum consumption and adverse environmental and health impacts. It awards labels to qualified products to increase consumer recognition and use, and designates preferred products for federal agencies making purchasing decisions. The new USDA product label indicates products have been independently certified to meet USDA BioPreferred program standards for biobased content.

Purell green certified instant hand sanitizer foam is produced by Gojo Industries and is made with 100% naturally renewable plant-derived ethanol in a readily biodegradable formula. Gojo is 1-of-the-11 companies approved to use the USDA’s new product label on certified biobased products.

"We are extremely pleased to be among the first products to attain the USDA’s BioPreferred label," stated Nicole Koharik, Gojo global sustainability senior marketing manager. "The distinction furthers our company’s sustainability efforts to promote hand hygiene for the well-being of people and the environment."

Poise taps Kris Jenner for campaign

BY Michael Johnsen

NEW YORK — The Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner has signed on to be part of Poise’s “Great Women in History” series, launched last year, to highlight the fact that many great women throughout history have had to contend with light bladder leakage, Poise manufacturer Kimberly-Clark announced Thursday.

“Like millions of women, I have my own experiences with LBL, but I’ve never let it keep me from living life to the fullest,” Jenner stated. “Inspired by the impact that last year’s ‘Great Women in History’ series had on women with LBL, I’ve teamed up with the Poise brand to help women understand that LBL is common and manageable, so it shouldn’t stop them from doing great things and being the incredible and accomplished women they are.”

In honor of Women’s History Month in March, Jenner portrayed Rosie the Riveter, an American cultural icon, representing millions of women who also may have dealt with LBL but didn’t let that hold them back from doing great things.

The call to action will draw women to the website 1in3LikeMe.com to write a caption for Jenner’s photograph relaying the LBL story from Rosie the Riveter’s perspective. Each visitor who submits a caption automatically will be entered for a chance to win a trip to a destination featured in the “Great Women in History” series and to have her LBL tagline featured with the photo on MyDaily.com/1in3.

Poise will donate $1 for every woman who participates in the campaign to Women’s Health Foundation, an organization committed to championing women’s pelvic health issues.

“By introducing Kris as Rosie the Riveter, we are adding fuel to the national conversation we ignited last year,” stated Amy Schubin, brand manager for Poise. “We are committed to arming women with LBL with the knowledge that they are not alone and that the Poise brand offers protection to help them be themselves.”
