Physicans Formula announces Q3 results

AZUSA, Calif. Physicians Formula Holdings posted a 9.4 percent increase in net sales for the third quarter and is optimistic about 2008 as it introduces its new Organic Wear line.

Net sales for the quarter ended Sept. 30 totaled $19.8 million, up 9.4 percent compared with $18.1 million in the year-ago period. This is in line with the outlook range of $18.5 million to $20.5 million.

Net income per diluted common share totaled 1 cent on about 14.6 million diluted common shares outstanding. Excluding a 5 cent per share non-cash charge for stock-based compensation after tax, adjusted net income per diluted common share would have been 6 cents per share.

“I am pleased with the additional space allocations and increased distribution for 2008. I believe this illustrates the overall strength of the brand and our successful product innovation, as well as the expertise and talents of everyone here at Physicians Formula,” stated Ingrid Jackel, chief executive officer of Physicians Formula.

As part of its 2008 initiatives, the company will introduce at retail beginning in February its new Organic Wear line, a makeup line consisting of 42 SKUs featuring Ecocert organic certification. Ecocert is an internationally recognized organic certification designed to guarantee the genuine practice of environmental respect throughout the formulation and manufacturing of the product.

“With an increasing desire for greener lifestyles, more than half of all U.S. women seek personal care products with natural ingredients and 44 percent look specifically for organic ingredients,” stated Jackel. “It made sense to offer a complete line of makeup products based on certified organic ingredients to fulfill the needs of this new demographic.”

The line, which has a shelf life of up to 24 months, includes such products as a concealer stick, tinted moisturizer, liquid bronzer and loose powder.

All formulations feature a proprietary EcoBlend complex that features OrganicSoy and Eco-Olive, certified organic soy and olive.

The packaging is the first-ever, patent-pending dual-compartment paper compact. The compact uses 93 percent less plastic than the traditional plastic compact.

Dr. Bronner’s announces move to fair trade, organic ingredients

ESCONDIDO, Calif. Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps has announced that by December 2007 all major ingredients in its soaps will come from certified fair trade and organic sources.

Over the course of the 2006-2007 period, the company has reorganized how it sources its major raw materials, including organic coconut, palm and olive oil. They account for more than 95 percent of its raw material purchases.

In addition, the company has outlined the following fair trade program:

  • It purchases all major materials directly from sources that provide collective power to growers and workers and are good partners in implementing community development products.
  • It guarantees farmers a price, which covers cost of production and a decent return, even when market prices collapse, with an organic premium paid on top. Pricing is transparent to farmers and payments will be on time.
  • It ensures that fair wages are paid to farm and factory workers, the rules of the International Labor Organization on worker representation and work hours are followed, and physical working conditions are more comfortable.
  • It pays an extra Fair Trade premium, 10 percent of the price of materials and labor. Depending on local needs, the premium either goes directly to growers to improve their income or into a fund for local development projects such as education, day care and health care programs; sanitation improvement; organic fertilizer provisions to small growers; and funding for small businesses.
  • For ongoing inspection and certification of its program, the company is engaging the Swiss organic certifying organization IMO. Concurrently, it is working with the Fair Trade Labeling Organization to develop product specific standards for its major materials.

Lornamead launches LypSyl in North America

STAMFORD, Conn. Personal care products company Lornamead has announced the North American launch of LypSyl lip care products.

LypSyl has been available in Europe for more than 100 years and is now being sold throughout the United States in improved formulations and new packaging, the company stated.

The products feature pure Swedish beeswax for ultimate moisture and protection. They also contain a blend of natural and therapeutic ingredients, including organic shea butter, chamomile, aloe vera, vitamins A and E and tea tree oil.

LypSyl is available in five formulations including LypMoisturizer (in mint and HoneyBerry flavors); LypRadiance, which imparts a bit of shine and has a fruity flavor; LypMedication, which is medicated with eucalyptus and tea tree oils; and LypSensitivity, which is fragrance- and flavor-free.

The products have a suggested retail price ranging from $2.99 to $3.49.
