P&G lends a hand to Kroger’s Honoring Our Heroes campaign

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble has teamed up with Kroger to support the United Services Organization.

In line with Kroger’s USO support campaign called Honoring Our Heroes, P&G will launch a Mega Event sales promotion through which customers at participating Kroger banner stores receive $5 instantly at checkout when they purchase 10 participating P&G Mega Event items.

Kroger and P&G also will build on the partnership through a Web application, where consumers virtually can shake the hand of a hero and receive a special offer on one of the following P&G brands: Tide, Downy, Gillette, Pantene, Old Spice and Prilosec.

Kroger’s Honoring Our Heroes campaign also will include a $250,000 donation to the USO to aid the organization’s mission to help American troops and their families.

Walgreens offers assistance to disaster relief

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens has donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross to aid those affected by the storms and tornadoes that recently hit the Southeast.

The drug store chain also is providing nonperishable food, medical supplies and water directly to local shelters and first responders in Alabama and Georgia. Additionally, cleaning supplies and three truckloads of water also have been donated.

“As so many try to pull together to recover after these devastating storms and tornadoes, we want to offer any assistance we can to our friends, customers and communities to help them get back on their feet,” said Chuck Greener, Walgreens VP corporate affairs and communications. “Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy, and we are in contact with groups on the ground to help provide critical supplies to those most in need.”

Mack Elevation Forum tackles the new path to purchase, innovation

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Success often is one of the biggest blind spots a company can have, because you’re so busy doing well you don’t have the time to assess what it is you’re doing. That is one of the core reasons for being for the Mack Elevation Forum, “a share group on steroids,” described program founder Dan Mack, EVP strategic business development for the Swanson Group. The forum hosted its most recent meeting Friday morning here at the Hilton Scottsdale.

The group brings together executives from noncompeting, smaller to mid-sized companies to examine critical business issues with the ultimate goal of enabling participants to align their sales and marketing strategies with the broader vision of the retailers they do business with. In all, executives from more than 20 different supplier companies generally attend.

Today there is a new path to purchase for the consumer: 38% are using mobile devices to make their final purchasing decisions, and 31% are using their mobile devices in the store at the point of sale to influence a purchase. For retailers and vendors that means a new path to consumer education and delivering product innovation, Mack explained. It’s about finding the holes in the market and figuring out where your brand can play a role. For small companies with the dexterity to adapt quickly to the market, it’s an opportunity to “put a ding in the universe,” in the words of Steve Jobs, co-founder and CEO of Apple. It’s the difference between cutting up the same old pie a different way and baking a whole new pie.

To kick off the conversation, guest speaker Joe Magnacca, president of daily living products and solutions at Walgreens, briefed Elevation Forum attendees on the transformation occurring today at Walgreens as the company moves from what Magnacca described as an “operations-based” to a “merchant-based” business model.

Magnacca, the veteran of Canadian retailing who led the major transformation of New York’s Duane Reade stores to one of the design jewels in all of retail, talked about the new challenges that will lie ahead as the company continues to experiment and explore the drug store of the future. As the size of the box is not likely to change very much, retailers will look to new profit centers in the store, such as expanded convenience foods and more fresh offerings and retail clinics, all of which will create new pressure for vendors to demonstrate the uniqueness and nontransferability of their products in order to stay on the shelf.

Discussion led to opportunities for vendors to help retailers like Walgreens create more of an experience for shoppers in the store. One way to accomplish that is with product packaging, shared Tim Cleary, VP sales at Purell Consumer/Gojo Industries. “The stronger the SKU level differentiation — by utilizing relevant colors [and] disruptive packaging — the more compelling your brand experience can become," he said.

Tina Jackse, senior director of national accounts at Beiersdorf, noted that social media is one area to tie into retailer efforts to help improve the shopping experience. “We try to ensure that your company’s social media and other marketing efforts align to the brand image and merchandising being utilized within the store,” she said. To get there, Marty Marion, CEO of Cobalis, suggested using a third-party partner to help coordinate all social media tactics under one comprehensive platform — what he called an “event-driven” social media program.
