PediaCare Cold & Flu Hydration introduced

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — A new product from the PediaCare line is designed to keep children hydrated when they have a cold or flu.

Prestige Brands Holdings announced the launch of PediaCare Cold & Flu Hydration, designed to ensure children get needed fluids and electrolytes. The product replenishes nutrients lost from illness and provides immune-boosting antioxidants, with less sugar than sports drinks, soda and juices.

"When a child is ill, they can lose necessary vitamins and minerals that help keep them hydrated," PediaCare senior brand manager Carol Bishop said. "PediaCare Cold & Flu Hydration helps keep a sick child hydrated by replacing the lost fluid and electrolytes without the added sugar of other drinks while also providing antioxidants."

New tablet eliminates, not masks, bad breath, creator says

LOS ANGELES — A Los Angeles-based entrepreneur says he’s built a better breath mint.

The breath tablet InFresh promises to "systematically eliminate" bad breath rather than masking it, as other products do. The product is a concentrated tablet that uses chlorophyll to eliminate the causes of bad breath, creater Elias Chavando said. Chavando came up with the idea in 2000 and worked with physicians and homeopathic product experts to develop it.

"If you’re looking for a mint-flavored candy, this is not for you," Chavando said. "If you’re looking for a cure, this is for you."

The tablet is made with a formula of chlorophyll-rich greens, such as alfalfa, parsley, wheatgrass and mint called Formula Seven. Chavando said the flavor takes some getting used to, but "after a couple of uses, our customers are hooked and keep coming back for more."

Citi analyst: Flu activity up year over year in early December

NEW YORK — Predictions of a more active flu season are coming true as temperature differences have helped drive flu activity, a Citibank financial analyst wrote.

In a letter to investors, Citi Research analyst Deborah Weinswig wrote that influenza virus activity in the week ended Dec. 8 increased year over year for the ninth consecutive time this season and increased significantly compared with last week — up 28.3% compared with last week’s 20.7%.

Meanwhile, natural temperatures during the week were significantly warmer compared with the same period last year, but cooler year-over-year temperatures in the prior four weeks helped drive increased flu activity.

Overall, the Midwest, Southeast and Central parts of the country experienced the highest flu activity during the week. The U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network reported that 2.8% of patient visits during the week were due to influenza-like illness, above the national baseline of 2.2% and the highest percentage this season. Activity was up by 0.9% from last week and above the 1.2% reported during the same period last year.

The report noted that while Walgreens reported a 10-bps negative impact due to lower cough, cold and flu incidence, Weinswig said the chain lost flu shot share in a competitive environment, while CVS reported that front-end same-store sales experienced a positive effect from flu-related sales.
