Ocean Spray introduces Cran-Lemonade flavor and summer vacation promotion

LAKEVILLE-MIDDLEBORO, Mass. — Ocean Spray announced today a new lemonade flavor juice drink coinciding with a company promotion partnered with JetBlue Airways for consumers to receive a summer getaway.

Ocean Spray is launching Cran-Lemonade juice drinks in original and diet varieties. The diet drink has just five calories. The new flavor combines sun-ripened cranberries and sweet lemons, and delivers 100% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C in each serving.

To help promote the new summer-inspired drink, Ocean Spray has partnered with JetBlue Airways to award a person "who makes every day more sunny" with selfless contributions to the community around them.

“You know this person,” said Kristen Borsari, director of marketing, Ocean Spray. “He’s your child’s teacher or after-school tutor, the dedicated volunteer at your local library or soup kitchen … she’s your caring neighbor or friend. Now it’s your chance to return the favor, by giving back a little of the sunshine they spread to others.”

Beginning June 8, the cooperative will spotlight a nominee per day via their Facebook page before selecting three finalists, whose stories will be shared via video for fan vote in July. To nominate someone, the individual should be a community volunteer, teacher or civil servant. Family members or friends are welcome, the company stated. The company notes also these should be people who make the lives of others around them better.

From now through June 7, nominations are open on Ocean Spray’s Facebook page. Nominations should contain at least 200 words, but no more than 500 words. Bartell’s partners with local charity for summer food drive

SEATTLE — Regional chain Bartell Drugs will sponsor a food drive starting on Sunday, the company said.

The Seattle-based retailer said Friday that it would partner with Food Lifeline to sponsor the Bartell’s Community Food Drive, which will last through June 1.

All of the chain’s 58 stores will accept non-perishable food items to replenish local food banks during the summer, when families that depend on free or reduced-price school meals may have difficulty providing healthy meals at home. Bartell’s summer food drives have collected more than 125,000 pounds of food for local food banks since 2009.

The company welcomes suggested items such as canned tuna, instant oatmeal, cereals, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jam, cheese crackers, apple sauce and canned fruit, as well as items like baby formula, diapers, baby food, toothpaste, toothbrushes, tissues and soap.

U.K. deal-maker Stefano Pessina confident in profitable 2013-2014 for Alliance Boots

Alliance Boots posted a double-digit adjusted profit gain of 12.7% to $1.2 billion for its year ended March 31. Almost half of that profit is staked by Walgreens with its 45% share of the European pharmaceutical distributing powerhouse. 

A couple days later, Alliance Boots along with Walgreens and AmerisourceBergen announced the necessary regulatory clearances on that strategic partnership, cementing the three companies in place as the largest generic pharmaceutical acquisition company in the world. That deal will further enable the companies to realize greater profit margins. 

That’s one of the reasons behind the confidence expressed by Alliance Boots executive director Stefano Pessina. Worldwide, there will continue to be pressure on respective economies. Because both actual healthcare costs and the cost to manage that health care will likely continue to rise, that places Walgreens/Boots/ABC in the catbird seat as potentially the lowest-cost provider. 

It’s not just a larger pharmaceutical distribution engine that will help move Alliance Boots’ actual profit higher. Like Walgreens in the U.S., Boots is looking to expand its patient services at the ground level through its U.K. pharmacy. Earlier this year, Alliance Boots extended its hearing care partnership with Sonova through a 49% minority investment in its U.K. subsidiary that operates Boots hearing care practices across the U.K. 

And the company’s healthy cash flow and access to funding will further help Alliance Boots target additional strategic acquisitions in the future, enabling the company to quickly realize its intent to extend into prospect-rich markets like China and Latin America. 

It certainly appears Alliance Boots, and by proxy Walgreens, are only now setting the stage for the main feature. Expect both company’s growth in adjusted profit to continue.
