Ocean Spray introduces Craisins 100-calorie packs

LAKEVILLE-MIDDLEBORO, Mass. Craisins brand dried cranberry snacks, produced by Ocean Spray, will now be available in 100-calorie packs, the company said. The sweetened dried cranberries are being touted as a healthy snack alternative that can be enjoyed on the go.

“Offering 100-calorie packs gives consumers another way to enjoy Craisins—whenever and wherever they want,” said Ocean Spray’s chief operating officer of domestic business, Ken Romanzi.

Fat-free, cholesterol-free Craisins also are reported as a good source of fiber. Ocean Spray said they also have no added artificial flavors or preservatives, and are trans fat free.

The new Craisins 100-calorie packs retail at $2.89 and are now available at grocery stores, supermarkets and other retailers across the United States.

General Mills introduces gluten-free Rice Chex

MINNEAPOLIS General Mills last week announced that it has altered Rice Chex cereal slightly so it is now gluten-free.

The company said that it only has replaced the barley malt syrup in the cereal with molasses, and the original flavor is the same.

General Mills also said that the company has taken steps to ensure that during production there no products containing gluten come in contact with Rice Chex, and the new assembly line follows FDA standards.

“General Mills and Chex recognize the growing consumer demand for gluten-free products and we’re pleased to make Rice Chex, a classic American breakfast offering, available to more people,“ said Rohan Thakur, Chex cereal marketing manager. “We are also proud to partner with Celiac Disease Foundation to further generate awareness for celiac disease.”

New gluten-free Rice Chex will soon be available nationwide, the company said.

Sorrento introduces omega-3 enriched snack cheeses

BUFFALO, N.Y. After released reports that Americans may not be eating foods high enough in omega-3 fatty acids, Sorrento is coming through with a cheese fortified with omega-3 fats, Sorrento +Plus String Cheese with Omega-3s.

Sorrento brand +Plus Omega-3 string cheese is processed from milk that contains high levels of docosahexaenoic acid   and eicosapentaenoic acid, which are common sources of omega-3 fats. +Plus Omega-3 string cheeses also are high in protein.

Susan Thomas, marketing manager of snack cheese at Sorrento Lactalis, said, ”The new [Plus] Plus Omega-3 snack cheese responds to consumer demand for foods that offer nutrition, health, convenience and taste all rolled into one … With this new addition to the Plus line, consumers can enjoy the same delicious, fresh cheese taste that Sorrento is known for and feel good about eating healthy at the same time.”

The +Plus Omega-3 snack cheeses come in 1-oz servings with six servings per pack. They retail from $3.99 to $4.29 per package.
