Nielsen: Hispanic consumers’ buying power to grow 50% by 2015
NEW YORK — Hispanic consumers in the United States are considered a "fundamental component to future business success," according to a new Nielsen report.
In its new report, "The State of the Hispanic Consumer: The Hispanic Market Imperative," the research firm said the U.S. Hispanic population continues to grow, and as the demographic had a projected buying power of $1 trillion in 2010, it is expected to augment to $1.5 trillion in 2015, a 50% increase.
Additional findings in the report included:
The median age of Hispanics is 28 years old, nearly ten years younger than the total market median age of 37 years old;
Technology and media heavily influence this demographic: Hispanics spend 68% more time watching video on the Internet and 20% more time watching video on their mobile phones than non-Hispanic whites, Nielsen said; and
Hispanics exhibit product consumption patterns: Hispanics make fewer shopping trips per household than non-Hispanics; however, they spend more per trip.
"The Hispanic community in the United States is large and growing, and businesses must make strides to understand and engage these consumers," Nielsen vice chair Susan Whiting said. "Due to the general youth of this segment, family focus, strong culture and prevalent Spanish-language use, Hispanic consumers are impacting all areas of work and play and helping to redefine American culture in the 21st century."

Supervalu names new heads for Albertsons, Acme and Cub Foods
MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Monday announced three new executive appointments following the departure of Sue Klug, president of its Albertsons Southern California division.
Dan Sanders has been tapped to head Albertsons Southern California, Keith Wyche will lead Acme and Brian Audette has been named president at Cub Foods.
“Sue has been a champion of diversity and environmental stewardship for the company, and has been honored within the industry and community for these efforts,” stated Pete Van Helden, Supervalu EVP retail operations. “We thank Sue for her years of service and leadership in Southern California and wish her well as she moves on to dedicate her talent and attention to long-time personal and professional ambitions.”
Replacing Klug will be Sanders, current president of Supervalu’s Acme Markets division, based in Philadelphia. Sanders joined Acme in 2010 and led the division as it embarked on a large-scale effort to lower prices, improve sales and profitability, refocus customer service efforts and enhance shopper satisfaction. Sanders came to Acme from United Supermarkets in Lubbock, Texas, where he served as CEO for six years. During his time with United, Sanders served on the board of directors for the Western Association of Food Chains.
Wyche will succeed Sanders as president of Acme. He currently serves as the president of Supervalu’s Cub Foods division, a full-service retail and pharmacy chain with 67 stores in Minnesota and Illinois. A strong leader at Cub, Wyche has improved sales trends and grown profitability since joining the company in 2010. In addition to guiding the division’s strategy, he has been an active member in the community. Wyche began his career in sales, marketing and management roles with AT&T and IBM. Prior to coming to Supervalu, he was president of U.S. operations for Pitney Bowes’ Pitney Management Services division. Before that, he held various sales leadership and general management positions with Convergys and Ameritech. He is on the corporate board of directors for WMS Industries.
Taking over for Wyche at Cub Foods will be Audette, who began his grocery career working in Pick ‘N Save stores in Wisconsin. He joined Supervalu in 1991, gaining more than 20 years of experience in positions of increasing responsibility within category management, marketing and merchandising. He served as the group VP independent sales, marketing and merchandising within the supply chain organization before being named business transformation officer in 2010. Last year, he was promoted to group VP merchandising transformation and process improvement. Audette’s work has given him in-depth exposure to both the retail and wholesale areas of the business, and his intimate knowledge of the needs of the independent retailer will provide a strong foundation for his new role with Cub’s franchise owners.
FMI narrows Store Manager Awards field to nine finalists
ARLINGTON, Va. — The Food Marketing Institute on Monday selected nine finalists for the 12th annual Store Manager Awards competition, which identifies exceptional store managers who generate sales growth, provide great customer service, lead outstanding store teams and serve the community in unique ways. Among the nine, three winners will be named on May 1 in Dallas at the FMI2012 convention and retail trade show.
“The FMI Store Manager Award celebrates the daily achievements among all our store associates,” stated Leslie Sarasin, FMI president and CEO. “These nine candidates are the face of our food retail industry, and we celebrate the ways in which they make our companies shine.”
One grand prize winner will be chosen from each of three categories by size of the company: Category A (1-49 stores); Category B (50-199 stores); and Category C (200 or more stores).
All nine finalists will receive two complimentary registrations for FMI2012, three nights of hotel accommodations in Dallas and an engraved award. The three grand prize winners will each receive $1,000.
The tradition continues in Dallas this year as the winners will join the ranks of the 2011 grand prize winners Shawn Commons, PriceRite Supermarket, Reading, Pa.; Allan Bussey, Brookshire Grocery, Tyler, Texas; and Kristi Masterson, Hy-Vee, Sioux Falls, S.D.
