NFL’s Jon Beason, Harris Teeter partner on Thanksgiving food drive
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The National Football League’s Carolina Panthers linebacker Jon Beason will arrive at Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina to greet a Harris Teeter tractor trailer filled with product needed for a traditional holiday feast, the Carolina grocer announced Tuesday.
Harris Teeter is donating enough products for Beason and Harris Teeter associates to assemble 2,000 Thanksgiving dinner bags. After the bag assembly, Beason and Harris Teeter associates also will make a stop at the Boys & Girls Club Marsh Road chapter in Charlotte to personally distribute dinner bags to children and their families.
“It is important for families to have dinners together to make a difference in the lives of their children,” Beason said. “I’ve enjoyed holiday meals with my family for many years and am proud to be a part of a team that is not only helping fight hunger in the community but also making it easier for thousands of families to enjoy a holiday tradition.”
Each Thanksgiving bag will feed a family of four and will contain cranberry sauce, corn, green beans, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, soda, pie, rolls and ham. Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina will identify and distribute the 2,000 Thanksgiving bags to emergency pantries throughout its 19-county region before Thanksgiving. Unemployment rates have climbed into double digits in several counties served by Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, and emergency pantries and soup kitchens are reporting 30% to 40% increases in requests for assistance over this time last year.
“This is another great example of the many ways in which Harris Teeter provides for those in need in our community,” stated Kay Carter, executive director for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. “As one of our largest donors, they have helped us feed tens of thousands of hungry people.”
Vendors who contributed to the Thanksgiving bag drive include Heineken USA, Treasury Wine Estates, New York Packaging, Coca-Cola Bottling, Ocean Spray, Del Monte, Bruce Foods, Mt. Olive, General Mills, Idahoan Foods, Jessie Lord Bakery, Kings Hawaiian, Kraft Foods, Cargill and Mrs. T’s Pierogies.
Walgreens supports U.S. troops overseas
DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Tuesday announced the company is donating nearly $400,000 worth of personal care items to the United Service Organizations to support operations in Landstuhl, Germany. The donation includes first aid items, toiletries, diapers and baby bottles, as well as coloring books, gum and playing cards.
The donation was shipped in late October and should arrive by Veterans Day, Walgreens noted.
The items will support the USO Warrior Center at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, the nearest treatment center for wounded soldiers coming from Iraq and Afghanistan. The donation also will support other area USO centers in Ramstein and Stuttgart.
“We’re sending these necessities and well wishes to American troops and families overseas as a way to say ‘thank you’ for all that they do,” Walgreens community affairs director John Gremer said. “These items are products many need and use and we hope they’ll help make life a little easier.”
“USO Europe is honored to serve our nation’s service members as they deploy as well as welcome them home from combat zones,” USO Europe regional VP Walt Murren said. “This generous donation from Walgreens will further our mission of supporting our nation’s wounded warriors and bringing a touch of home to those who sacrifice so much.”
Walgreens has a long history of supporting American troops and veterans, from providing a store in the Pentagon beginning in the 1940s, to decades of donation and product drives, and extending company benefits to employees called to active service. Under the Walgreens military leave policy, employees called to active service receive their full salary, less military pay, for 42 months from the last day worked. In addition, they have the option of continuing medical, prescription and dental coverage at active employee rates.
