National childhood cancer awareness event held at Navarro Discount Pharmacy

MIAMI — Navarro Discount Pharmacy, in partnership with the Live Like Bella Foundation, recently hosted the National Childhood Cancer Awareness event to educate the community about the needs of children with cancer.

The event attracted more than 200 children and families and was held Sept. 13 at a Navarro Discount Pharmacy in Miami.

The parents of Miami’s Bella Rodriguez-Torres, who fought cancer and her paralysis six times until her death on May 28, 2013 at the age of 10 years old, attended the event and spoke on behalf of the Live Like Bella Foundation. Bella was paralyzed and diagnosed with stage four Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, when she was 4 years old. Bella is described as having unwavering faith, a loving heart and a great sense of compassion for others. The entire south Florida community, including Miami Heat and Miami Marlins players, embraced Bella. Her life and legacy lives on through the work of the Live Like Bella Foundation. Thousands of children are diagnosed with pediatric cancer each year, the leading cause of death for American children younger than age 15.

Activities at the event included children-focused food and snacks, a motorcade and helicopter flyover by Miami-Dade County Police, face painting and "Live Like Bella" merchandise for sale. Navarro donated 100% of the proceeds from the Live Like Bella merchandise sales that evening to the Live Like Bella Foundation. And, at 6 p.m., the Navarro store was lit in gold and yellow Wish lanterns were lit in remembrance of Bella.

For more than 50 years, Navarro Discount Pharmacy has stood by the South Florida community focusing on health-and-wellness events for the entire family. Each year, Navarro partners with dozens of local nonprofit organizations that educate its customers on a variety of illnesses, including diabetes and heart disease. Wellness Wednesdays are held at each of Navarro’s 33 stores where customers can access free health screenings and receive advice from health professionals and pharmacists.

Chicago Tribune: Walgreens stakes claim to third Chicagoland flagship location within Wrigley Building

CHICAGO — Walgreens will be staking a third flagship store in the iconic Wrigley Building here, the Chicago Tribune reported recently

According to the report, the Walgreens will have a footprint as large as 30,000 sq. ft. And California coffee shop Peet’s will be setting up next door. 

The Wrigley Building had recently undergone a renovation — to the tune of $70 million, which included a full restoration of the exterior terra cotta.

Target donates to flood-relief efforts in Colorado

MINNEAPOLIS — Target is donating $25,000 for relief efforts in Colorado following devastating floods there, the mass merchandise retailer said Thursday. The donation includes $20,000 for the American Red Cross and $5,000 in food, water and baby items.

According to media reports, about half a dozen people are confirmed dead and 200 are unaccounted for amid floods caused by what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration called once-in-a-millennium rainfall. Property losses are estimated at nearly $2 billion.

"As our communities in Colorado begin to recover from these massive floods, our team stands shoulder to shoulder with our neighbors in the area," Target chairman, president and CEO Gregg Steinhafel said. "To aid local recovery responses, we will donate product and funds and make sure our stores closest to the disaster area are able to offer needed supplies."
