NACDS Foundation collects nearly $1.8 million at New York dinner
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The 14th annual National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation dinner raised nearly $1.8 million to fund research, charity and scholarships, the foundation said Wednesday.
The dinner, which took place in New York Tuesday night, included a keynote address by former secretary of state and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, retired Gen. Colin Powell, who reflected on its five decades of leadership. NACDS Foundation president Kathleen Jaeger said during her remarks at the dinner, "We could not do the important work of the foundation without guidance and leadership of our supporters and friends. We’re researching ways to help patients manage their medications better. We’re researching new ways to advance patient health in emerging healthcare models. We’re introducing higher education and research opportunities to evaluate innovative practices that offer increased access to millions of patients."
The NACDS Foundation also recognized recipients of the 2012 Excellence and Patient Care Awards, Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Harvard University Medical School clinicians and researchers Michael Fischer and William Shrank. Fischer and Shrank, who researched interventions to improve medication adherence, were selected from among researchers, organizations and advocates for their work to advance patient care, each receiving a $5,000 grant to continue advancing their work.
The dinner also included "Together," a video designed to show the foundation’s mission of advancing patient care through community pharmacy with research, education and charity, highlighting partnerships and collaborative efforts of allies focused on improving patient health and quality of life.
OTCs popular choice to treat both acute and chronic maladies
Consumers are increasingly turning to OTCs to treat their conditions, including both acute, episodic conditions like the common cold and such chronic conditions as frequent pain and allergy. However, the extent to which OTCs are used varies by condition, according to an online survey of more than 900 AccentHealth viewers conducted in September. Headache sufferers reported using OTC medications most often (89%), while sufferers of certain digestive disorders use OTCs less often (53%).

Smart Insurance partners with Walgreens on in-store consults for Medicare beneficiaries
CLEVELAND — Smart Insurance on Wednesday announced it is working with Walgreens to offer in-store consultations with licensed SmartD Rx plan agents, available at select Walgreens to speak with Medicare beneficiaries who are either enrolling in a new Part D prescription drug plan or evaluating their current coverage options.
"With so many options, it can be difficult to choose the most cost-effective plan. One study last year found that nearly half of the seniors overspend on their Part D plans, from between $300 and $1,000," stated Smart Insurance CEO Pritpal Virdee. "In my opinion, the best plan is one that will allow a senior to maintain a relationship with a trusted local pharmacist and at the same time lower your prescription costs. Our licensed plan agents can help them do just that."
In addition to helping beneficiaries navigate the Medicare Part D landscape and answer questions about Medicare’s prescription drug plans, in-store agents are available for consultations about which SmartD Rx plan may best suit their healthcare needs. Those who participate in consultations will receive a Walgreens voucher that can be redeemed for 5,000 Balance Rewards loyalty points, worth $5 toward eligible purchases at participating Walgreens and Duane Reade drug stores. There is no obligation to enroll in the plan to receive this voucher, the company announced.
