Meal Measure looks to curb oversize portions

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — A new product from Apothecary Products that has been featured on "The Dr. Oz Show" and "The Today Show" is hoping to remove the guesswork of proper food portions when cooking a meal at home.

The Meal Measure Portion Control Plate works by placing the compartmentalized measurer directly on a plate. There are four portion-controlled cavities: two for fruits or vegetables, one for starches and one for protein. The food cavities are in accordance with MyPlate.gov guidelines for healthy portions and easily denote half- and full-cup portion sizes, as well as the recommended size of a protein serving — about the size of a deck of cards, according to Apothecary. The consumer can then fill the Meal Measure with the appropriate amount of food in accordance with their diet.

According to the company, portion control is one of the best ways to fight obesity, which can cause heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

The Meal Measure was created by a working mom and former lunch room attendant. It is BPA-free and recyclable, and is manufactured in the United States with a SRP of $12.99.

Tradition, heritage drive Hispanics’ protein consumption habits, study finds

CHICAGO — Hispanics often tick to their own traditions when it comes to selecting protein-rich foods, according to a new study.

Hispanics consume disproportionately high amounts of legumes, eggs, chicken and seafood compared with non-Hispanics, and the level of importance of these foods remains relatively unchanged from five years ago, and tradition and heritage drive meal choices among both Spanish- and English-speaking Hispanics, according to the NPD Group’s "NET Hispanic" study. NET stands for "national eating trends."

"It’s important for manufacturers and retailers to understand the role that tradition and heritage play in U.S. Hispanics food and beverage choices," NPD food and beverage industry analyst Darren Seifer said. "Understanding which product categories appeal to each Hispanic consumer group will be critical to effectively connecting with these consumers, and understanding the situations and motivations that drive category consumption will enable food companies to influence future sales to these groups."

The study found that Hispanics report chicken and beans as the proteins that most reflect their heritage, and chicken features in more afternoon meals among Hispanics than among non-Hispanics, but they still consume beef and yogurt at frequencies comparable to non-Hispanics. Cheese, nuts and seeds, peanut butter and turkey are consumed less frequently.

The study noted that the foods and beverages served in Hispanic households in the United States were the result of centuries of family tradition and national cuisine originating in Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba and other Spanish-speaking countries.

Bill Clinton to speak at NCPA show in October

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Former president Bill Clinton will address the National Community Pharmacists Association’s exposition in Orlando, Fla., this October, the group said Friday.

The NCPA’s 115th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition will take place Oct. 12-16 at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort.

After leaving office as the 42nd president, Clinton founded the William J. Clinton Foundation to improve global health, strengthen economies, promote healthier childhoods and protect the environment, including helping 4.5 million people living with HIV and AIDS gain access to drugs.

"NCPA’s convention offers independent community pharmacists an edge," NCPA president Donnie Calhoun said. "Now more than ever, community pharmacies must find a way to differentiate themselves from the competition. The programming and networking at this meeting offer pharmacists the path to stand out in their communities and the path to a successful future."
