GSK ceases making, distributing zinc-containing denture adhesives

BY Antoinette Alexander

NEW YORK GlaxoSmithKline has issued a consumer advisory warning consumers about a potential health risk associated with long-term, excessive use of its zinc-containing denture adhesives Super Poligrip Original, Ultra Fresh and Extra Care. As a precaution, the manufacturer has voluntarily stopped making, distributing and advertising these products.

According to GSK, it has discussed the situation with the Food and Drug Administration and no further action is required.

Polident denture cleanser tablets contain no zinc and are not affected by the announcement.

Recent reports suggest that excessive intake of zinc-containing denture adhesives over several years may result in neurological symptoms, including numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms and legs, difficulty with walking and balance, and blood problems like anemia. These reports are very rare, given that several million people use the products, GSK stated.

Super Poligrip Original, Ultra Fresh and Extra Care are safe to use as directed in the product label, according to GSK. Most consumers follow the directions but some apply more adhesive than directed and use it more than once a day. As a precaution, GSK has decided to stop making, distributing and advertising the products.

If consumers have been using these products for several years in greater amounts than directed on the package or more than once a day, or have concerns about their health, GSK suggests that they stop using the product, talk with their doctor and use a zinc-free alternative such as Super Poligrip Free, Super Poligrip Comfort Seal Strips or Super Poligrip Powder.
