Lewis overhaul plays up Rx

BY DSN STAFF

Lewis Drug has a new face, which not only places a greater emphasis on the front end, but also boasts a larger, revamped pharmacy.

Those who have visited the newly opened store on Louise Avenue in Sioux Falls, S.D., undoubtedly will see the Lewis Drug store of the future, president and CEO Mark Griffin told Drug Store News in a recent interview.

The pharmacy area is about one-third larger than a typical Lewis Drug pharmacy and has been revamped. “Call it the new face of Lewis Drug. It incorporates an upscale environment, the beauty boutique, plank flooring in the pharmacy and an entertainment area in the pharmacy for waiting with flat-screen TVs and refreshments,” Griffin said. This new store also includes a “four seasons department,” which is a 4,000-sq.-ft. environmentally controlled room that can be used for various purposes throughout the year.

In addition, Lewis Drug has expanded its grocery departments in about a dozen locations. In its larger stores, about 2,000 sq. ft. to 3,000 sq. ft. have been dedicated to grocery items with a concentration on snack foods, grab-and-go items and frozen foods.

Bartell benefits from HBW

BY Alaric DeArment

Bartell Drugs, a family-owned regional chain since 1890, has still got it. The chain has brought together health and personal care by sponsoring health and beauty events, the first of which happened in October 2010 and featured health screenings, cosmetic demonstrations and hairstyling tips. Another event is scheduled for the fall.

Vaccinations have featured prominently in the chain’s business as well, with in-store flu vaccinations and corporate flu clinics for area businesses, as well as international travel clinics at 10 stores. In December 2010, the company donated 4,000 flu vaccine doses to support pharmacy outreach programs at the University of Washington and Washington State University, in Pullman, Wash., providing vaccinations to nonprofit groups and Native American tribal communities.
