Kroger’s Southwest division forges ahead with three-step sustainability plan
HOUSTON — Kroger’s Southwest division, which consists of 208 stores in Texas and Louisiana, announced that it is continuing to reduce waste and conserve energy by moving forward with sustainable practices by renewing its three-step approach.
Kroger Southwest said its multipronged strategy — which includes goals to educate, maintain and invest — continues to be implemented. The retailer division said it educates associates through its Save 5 program. Developed by the retailer’s facility engineering team, associates are taught about the importance of closing doors, turning lights off, shutting down equipment after use, maintaining specified temperatures in refrigeration cases and not overstocking products.
For the maintenance prong, Kroger last year sold 5 million reusable bags to reduce plastic bag use by 159 million as part of its Bag-2-Bag program, which was introduced in 2008. Since its inception, more than 6.1 million lbs. of plastic have been collected and collectively recycled in the greater Houston, east Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth and Louisiana markets.
What’s more, the retailer division announced that it is investing in a new eco-friendly initiative called "Lighting Reinvention," which significantly will cut down the amount of kilowatts used in stores over a five-year period.
The announcement came at the heels of the 41st anniversary of Earth Day on April 22.
"We’re always looking for ways to reduce waste, conserve energy and better our transportation systems," Kroger Southwest division president Bill Breetz said. "By continually educating our associates, introducing new approaches and investing in programs, we’ve been able to significantly reduce our carbon footprint as a company and contribute to global sustainability efforts."
California Rite Aid stores offer discounted whooping cough vaccinations
CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid is selling whooping cough vaccines to parents in California at a reduced price, the retailer said Thursday.
As of July 1, a new state law will require proof of vaccination for all students entering grades 7 through 12, and nearly all of the retail pharmacy chain’s 600 stores in California will be able to vaccinate walk-in patients or by appointment. The reduced-price vaccine will sell for $57.99.
“Rite Aid is proud to make it easier — and cheaper — than ever for parents to get their children vaccinated against whooping cough, all well ahead of the start of the fall 2011 school year,” Rite Aid EVP pharmacy Robert Thompson said. “Rite Aid pharmacists stand ready to help meet the demand for convenient access to vital immunizations.”
For proof of vaccination, Rite Aid is participating in the California Immunization Registry, issuing wallet-sized immunization cards and issuing proof of past whooping cough vaccinations at any Rite Aid location.
Harris Teeter incentivizes shoppers to go green
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — In celebration of Earth Day and as part of its commitment to incorporating sustainable practices into its day-to-day business operations, Harris Teeter announced it has aligned with vendors to offer promotions that will reward customers for their green decisions.
The retailer said that shoppers that sign up for its e-VIC loyalty program by Earth Day will receive a free Harris Teeter reusable shopping bag. What’s more, VIC members will receive more loyalty points when they purchase the following products:
From April 6 through May 3, for every $1 a VIC-card customer spends on any combination of Dannon yogurt products, he or she will earn one point. When a shopper earns 20 points, the shopper will receive $3 off his or her next grocery bill, automatically targeted to his or her VIC card. Also, for every $1,000 worth of Dannon products purchased at Harris Teeter stores, Dannon will plant a tree in the community, up to 1,200 trees;
For four weeks beginning April 13, shoppers who recycle their old baking pans at participating Harris Teeter locations will receive discounts on a new Good Cook baking pan; and
Seventh Generation has partnered with Harris Teeter to offer the company’s VIC-card customers a free reusable bag when they purchase $5 or more in participating Seventh Generation products from April 20 to April 26. What’s more, the reusable bag will be targeted to a shopper’s VIC card and can be redeemed during a subsequent transaction made between April 20 and May 3.
