Kroger acquires digital coupon platform
CINCINNATI — Kroger on Tuesday announced it has purchased the assets of You Technology Brand Services, a Silicon Valley-based platform of digital coupons and promotions.
"You Tech’s nimble and innovative digital coupon platform has enabled Kroger to deliver hundreds of millions of digital coupons to Kroger customers," stated Jeff Talbot, Kroger’s VP customer loyalty. "This is a good strategic fit for both Kroger and You Tech. This transaction is consistent with our digital customer growth plan and provides Kroger a significant opportunity to expand our presence in Silicon Valley, enhancing our exposure to new technologies."
"We intend to build and grow the premier retailer and customer-centric digital coupon platform in the industry, while continuing to deliver for our broad base of retail customers," said Cheryl Black, You Tech’s CEO. "We look forward to partnering with Kroger and other retailers and CPG companies to continue driving growth."
Founded in 2008, You Tech’s retailer-centric, cloud-based platform bridges the gap between online engagement and in-store purchases, creating a measurable way to drive consumer purchase decisions online, in-store and on-the-go, the company stated. Its network, which includes Kroger.com/digitalcoupons, has grown dramatically and now includes more than 10,000 retail stores representing more than $100 billion in retail sales and 100 million U.S. households.
You Tech will continue to serve existing and future retail customers. Financial terms of the transaction, which closed today, were not disclosed.
Customer use of digital coupons has accelerated exponentially over the past several years. Kroger began offering digital coupons in late 2009 and reached 500 million digital coupon downloads about three years later. Customers have downloaded more than 400 million more digital coupons in just the last 12 months, Kroger reported.
Mackenthun’s aims to gain insight with ShopWell app
WACONIA, Minn. — Mackenthun’s Supermarket hopes to gain insight into shopper behavior through analyzing scans performed with the ShopWell nutrition personalization app. Shopper preferences and behaviors can now be segmented by gender, age, food allergies, or nutritional goals.
ShopWell’s algorithms provide shoppers with a single score and red, yellow, green ratings for food they scan, based on their unique needs. Specifically, the ShopWell scoring system assesses a product based on the shopper’s age, gender, health goals and how well the product meets their ingredient and nutrition preferences. The app also recommends healthier items if the product scanned is not a good fit. Mackenthun’s then has access to anonymized, aggregated shopper data to help shape decisions on product mix, merchandizing, and promotions.
"The ShopWell partnership will enable us to better serve our health and wellness focused shoppers" Ed Gardeski, general manager at Mackenthun’s Fine Foods said. "The nutritional requirements of our shoppers are more diverse than ever and we are committed to helping them develop eating habits tailored to enhance their health and wellbeing without sacrificing the quality and flavor they have come to expect from Mackenthun’s."
Kinney Drugs opens Healthy You Wellness Center
GOUVERNEUR, N.Y. and SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Regional player Kinney Drugs has teamed up with Pulmonary Health Physicians, PC and Franciscan Companies (an affiliate of St. Joseph’s Hospital) to open the Healthy You Wellness Center at a Kinney Drugs location in Syracuse.
“Access to convenient and affordable health care is a growing concern for the communities that we serve. We expect this problem to only worsen as millions of more patients gain medical coverage under the Affordable Care Act without a corresponding increase of medical providers available to treat them,” stated Mike Duteau, VP of business development and strategic relations for Kinney Drugs. “The Healthy You Wellness Center at Kinney Drugs is a collaborative effort designed to address the need for greater access to affordable health services in the Syracuse market, bridging the gaps in care coordination among health care providers and ultimately resulting in improved quality of care and health outcomes. As the premier provider of pharmacy health care services in our communities, the health and well-being of our patients is our top priority.”
Staffed by specialists from Pulmonary Health Physicians, PC, Healthy You Wellness Center will focus on disease state management as well as immediate care for certain health concerns. Services include assessment, treatment and management of chronic conditions such as COPD, emphysema, bronchitis and asthma, as well as diagnosis and treatment of illnesses such as the common cold, flu, allergies and sinus infections. The wellness center will also provide counseling for patients with sleep apnea and questions regarding smoking cessation options as well as oxygen therapy.
In addition, patients discharged from a hospital stay for respiratory complications will now have the option to receive follow-up care within three days of their discharge at the Healthy You Wellness Center. The pulmonary specialists at the center will work directly with the hospital and the Primary Care provider to help support patients on their path to better health and avoid preventable hospital readmissions.
"Developing a clinical relationship with a health care team like Pulmonary Health Physicians, PC, is an important step forward in improving access to quality healthcare," added Jim Spencer, president of Kinney Drugs stores. “Together our pharmacy and the Healthy You Wellness Center are advancing community pharmacy by providing an environment for coordinated health care, and helping more people improve their health and wellness.”
Services offered by Kinney Drugs such as free prescription delivery, ReadyScripts automatic refill program, and immunizations are also part of the overall care available to all Healthy You Wellness Center patients. Kinney Drugs has also implemented an expanded selection of durable medical equipment and sleep apnea supplies to further support the needs of this patient population.
