J&J subsidiary seeks new approval for psoriasis drug

HORSHAM, Pa. — Johnson & Johnson is seeking approval from the Food and Drug Administration for a drug to treat active psoriatic arthritis, the company said Thursday.

J&J subsidiary Janssen Biotech submitted an application to the FDA for Stelara (ustekinumab) for adult patients with the disease, which affects more than 2 million people in the United States, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. Another subsidiary is seeking approval for Stelara for the same usage in Europe.

"We are pleased to present applications to health authorities in the U.S. and Europe seeking approval of Stelara for the treatment of active psoriatic arthritis, a chronic, debilitating immune-mediated inflammatory diseases," Janssen Research and Development VP and head of immunology development Jerome Boscia said.

The drug is already approved for treating moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in adults.

Catamaran opens Indianapolis Center of Excellence

LISLE, Ill. — Pharmacy benefit manager Catamaran Corp. has opened a new "Center of Excellence" in downtown Indianapolis, the company said Thursday.

Catamaran announced the opening of the 13,000-square-foot center, which it said will support the services it will provide under the $60 million, six-year Medicaid contract with the Indiana state government, signed in October.

The center, one of 11 around the country, officially opened in a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week, attended by state officials and healthcare leaders, and will house pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and others.

"Catamaran’s Center of Excellence model is the cornerstone of our business strategy and allows us to organize our expertise and talent around a specific client to deliver industry-leading results," Catamaran segment president Dan Hardin said. "It’s a best-of-breed approach that has proven very effective in driving down the cost of healthcare while enhancing access to care and customer satisfaction."

Navarro Discount Pharmacy unveils 32nd store

MIAMI — Navarro Discount Pharmacy has announced the opening of its 32nd store in Kendall, Fla.

“The new store in West Kendall is well-positioned in the Kendale Lakes Plaza among other discount brand retailers,” stated Juan Ortiz, president and CEO of Navarro Discount Pharmacy. “We are also pleased to return to the Kendall area and meet the demands of the community looking for Navarro’s everyday low pricing and unique assortment.”

The first 100 customers received a free Navarro reusable bag filled with product, and there was free product sampling throughout the day. Free blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and weight screenings were held on opening day, concluding with a mini wine festival.

“The Kendall store has several new departments, including a garden center, staffed copy center and a cafeteria,” said Guillermo Mestre, Kendall store manager.

The 23,500-sq.-ft. store layout features new colors and enhanced signage in English and Spanish, wider aisles, a fragrance section with added light boxes, and more products in the refrigerated food and dairy section. Navarro’s unique services for customers include a pediatric window for busy parents, compounding pharmacy services, a free Diabetes Club for adults and children with diabetes, a Mommy and Me club and free prescription delivery for all customers.

Navarro’s signature products for Hispanics also available in the Kendall store include Café La Llave Expresso coffee and Fabuloso multipurpose cleaner, plus such brands as Valentini, El Sembrador and La Fe. Navarro’s new Vida Mia store brand products, with labels in English and Spanish, are also available throughout the store in a variety of categories, including baby, beauty, food, household, health and OTC.
