Jewel-Osco to test small-store concept
MELROSE PARK, Ill. Jewel-Osco says it will open a new small-format store in the Chicago area later this year.
Dubbed “Urban Fresh,” the 16,000-square-foot store will open in the Lincoln Park section of Chicago this fall. The store will emphasize ready-to-go meals along with a selection of fresh meats, seafood and produce. Parent company Supervalu has not said whether the store would feature a pharmacy.
“The smaller-store format is an exciting complement to our larger, more traditional grocery stores,” said Keith Nielsen, president of Jewell-Osco, which currently has 32 stores in the Chicago area.
Urban Fresh will be the latest in a growing number of small-format grocery stores launched in the United States during the past year. Tesco currently has 65 Fresh & Easy stores on the West Coast and Safeway opened its first “The Market” store in Long Beach, Calif. in late May. And Wal-Mart plans to open four small “Marketside” grocery stores in Phoenix this fall.
CVS offers consumers new ways to save photos at Kodak kiosks
WOONSOCKET, R.I. and ROCHESTER, N.Y. CVS/pharmacy and Eastman Kodak Company have announced that CVS is the first national retailer to offer customers both Photo Books and Kodak Picture Movie DVDs.
These new photo processing products turn customers’ photos into hard-cover books and movies, respectively, in minutes, using the Kodak Picture Kiosk. Both of these products are now available in more than 4,500 CVS/pharmacy stores nationwide.
Customers can bring their photos—in nearly any format, from prints to memory cards—to CVS and have them either printed and bound or placed on a customized DVD almost immediately. For two weeks in July, CVS customers enrolled in the ExtraCare rewards program will receive credit for a single use of the cost of each of these two features.
CVS pioneered the in-store Kodak Photo Book service in 2007, and now with the DVDs, the company states, “is once again spearheading the adoption of an industry innovation.”
The Photo Book promotional week will last from today through July 19 and includes the 4×6 or 6×8 book. The Kodak Picture Movie DVD promotional week will be July 27 through Aug. 2. ExtraCare cardholders will instantly receive back the price of the Photo Book or Kodak Picture Movie DVD in Extra Bucks, which can be used towards nearly anything in CVS/pharmacy.
Schlicker tapped to head Giant-Landover, Stop & Shop
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold announced Thursday that it had appointed Giant-Carlisle president and chief executive officer Carl Schlicker as president and chief executive officer of its Giant-Landover and Stop & Shop chains.
Schlicker succeeds Jose Alvarez, whom Ahold appointed executive vice president for global business development, reporting directly to Ahold chief executive officer John Rishton.
“We have chosen to make these changes as the Value Improvement Program expands beyond price repositioning,” Rishton said.
The program, which began in 2006, involves increasing profits by revamping product and service offerings while reducing costs and prices.
