Ind. law expands pharmacist-administered vaccinations

NEW YORK — Under a new law, pharmacists in Indiana will be able to provide an expanded range of immunizations that includes human papillomavirus.

The new law will also allow pharmacists to give immunizations for whooping cough, pneumonia, tetanus, diphtheria and meningitis starting on July 1. Currently, they may only administer flu vaccines. Pharmacists can give the immunizations under a drug order, prescription or according to a protocol approved by physicians. The protocols are available for elderly people receiving the pneumonia vaccine and those ages 11 years and older for the others, lower than the currently required age of 14 years.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence signed the bill on April 29 in an event attended by leaders from the Indiana Pharmacists Association; the Indiana Retail Council; pharmacists from Walgreens, Kroger, Salem, Ind.-based DanMar Pharmacy, where the signing took place, and others; and heads of the pharmacy schools of Purdue University, Butler University and Manchester University.

Walgreens enhances app developer program

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens announced on Thursday that its QuickPrints API now gives participants the ability to tap into functionality, enabling app users to produce and send photo books, wall calendars and folded cards for same-day printing at Walgreens.

Through the company’s Developer Program, third-party app developers can easily integrate the API and its new functionality.

“We’re thrilled to provide app developers with the technology that allows their users to be more creative with their pictures by allowing them to create fun photo products, such as photo books and folded cards,” stated Jasbir Patel, senior director and GMM for photo and e-commerce. “We’re transforming the art of scrapbooking and the personalization of cards by encouraging mobile users to preserve their memories in a more convenient way.”

To celebrate the latest enhancements, Walgreens has launched a contest designed to encourage app developers to incorporate the photo book, wall calendars and folded cards functionality into an app. Participants can enter Thursday through Sept. 30. Walgreens will award the contest winners cash prizes of $2,000 for the best photo book integration, $2,000 for the best folded cards integration, and $2,000 for the best wall calendar integration.

In addition to the added functionality, the QuickPrints API allows for standard, square, canvas and poster prints, as well as flat photo card printing. The developer products are eligible for a 15% revenue share commission earned when the photo order is purchased from a local Walgreens.
