Hy-Vee launches mobile shopping app

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Hy-Vee has introduced a mobile application that it said could make locating pie crust in its stores as easy as saying "pie."

The supermarket chain announced the release of the app, which allows customers to locate products, browse ads, search for recipes, build shopping lists, shop and interact with the company through social media. The app is built on the AT&T Mobile Enterprise Applications Platform and uses Taqtile Mobility’s Shingle solution.

"We decided to jump into the social media conversation and make our stores easier to navigate by developing an app that helps you find the foods you’re looking for faster and even tweet about what’s missing on our shelves," Hy-Vee assistant VP media relations Ruth Comer said. "This app gives us another way to communicate with customers and fulfill our mission of making lives easier, healthier and happier."

Stop & Shop customers, partners donate nearly $2 million through Food for Friends program

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop announced that its customers and partners donated nearly $2 million through the company’s annual fundraising program.

The supermarket chain said it will donate 100% of the funds, raised through the 22nd annual Food for Friends program, to regional food banks and local pantries across the Northeast as part of the company’s hunger relief efforts.

The storewide effort ran from Oct. 28 and through Dec. 11, 2011.

"Food for Friends is an easy way for communities to come together and give food security to those who wouldn’t otherwise have it," said Mark McGowan, president of Stop & Shop’s New England division. "We are proud to have partnered with our customers and help provide more than 15 million meals to families across the Northeast this winter."

Supervalu names new chief marketing officer

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Tuesday named Michael Moore EVP and chief marketing officer. Moore will lead all of the company’s marketing activities, including overseeing customer and brand strategy, advertising, customer loyalty, and research and analytics.

Moore was named to the top marketing post following this week’s decision by Julie Dexter Berg to leave the company and return to the West Coast.

“Michael has a terrific understanding of the food industry and the challenges we face as a grocery retailer in today’s environment,” stated Craig Herkert, Supervalu CEO and president. “I am confident that he will move quickly to build marketing programs that are effective and efficient while ensuring that we continue to drive traffic and sales through innovative and engaging consumer marketing programs.” Moore will report directly to Herkert.

Moore, 47, joined the company in 2011 in the role of business transformation officer, where he helped to further the implementation of Supervalu’s turnaround. Prior to Supervalu, Moore spent 24 years in a variety of executive leadership positions within customer business development at Procter & Gamble. He most recently served as director of P&G’s grocery retail group, where he led the business unit directly responsible for more than 30% of P&G’s annual food channel sales.
