Harris Teeter continues promoting Yourwellness

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Harris Teeter is encouraging shoppers to get healthy in 2011 by promoting its Yourwellness program.

The program, which launched in 2006, helps customers learn about healthy lifestyle changes through its membership program, where customers can receive exclusive tips and savings via e-mail. This year, the retailer said, two members of the Yourwellness team — Russell Greenfield, known as "Dr. Russ," and nutritionist Beth Avery — will take shoppers on a video tour of Harris Teeter’s grocery aisles. Their goal: to help customers learn how to prepare a variety of delicious foods while keeping wellness in mind.

In late September 2010, the retailer expanded its Yourwellness program by offering an updated generic prescription savings club.

Walmart Foundation donates $2 million to make food banks ‘green’

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart’s philanthropic arm announced a $2 million donation to help food banks save money on energy bills.

This funding, the Walmart Foundation said, will help 16 food banks "go green" by becoming more energy efficient through lighting, refrigeration or heating and air-conditioning equipment upgrades.

This initiative is a part of Walmart’s commitment to fighting hunger. In May, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation announced a $2 billion cash and in-kind commitment through the end of 2015, including:

  • Donating more than 1.1 billion lbs. of food from Walmart stores, distribution centers and Sam’s Club locations, valued at $1.75 billion;

  • Giving $250 million in grants to support hunger relief organizations at the national, state and local levels; and

  • Collaborating with government, food manufacturers and other corporations that are fighting hunger to increase impact and reach a greater number of families in need.

"These grants underscore Walmart’s commitment to lead on both hunger relief and sustainability," said Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation. "Every dollar these food banks save on energy costs is another dollar they can use to help meet the hunger needs of their local communities."

Family Dollar names SVP apparel, home and seasonal

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar Stores announced that it has named Paul White to the position of SVP apparel, home and seasonal. White will report to Dorlisa Flur, EVP and chief merchandising officer.

"Creating an exciting offering of discretionary merchandise to complement our growing consumable assortment is the cornerstone to being a compelling place to shop for our customers," said Flur. "With Paul’s leadership, we will further improve merchandise selection and in-store presentation of these dynamic areas of our assortment, adding more of the fun of finding a unique treasure in apparel, home, and seasonal items for our customers to enjoy."

White is the past president, CEO, and director of Goody’s, where he refocused the merchandising and marketing strategies on the core customer while leading the company’s exit from bankruptcy. Other retail experience includes senior merchandising leadership roles at Shopko Stores and The May Department Stores Co.
