H-E-B bucks retail trend by closing early on Thanksgiving Day
SAN ANTONIO — H-E-B has opted to buck the trend of retailers opening their doors to Black Friday deals as early as Thanksgiving Day, the company announced Friday.
"In its continued commitment to support the well-being of families throughout Texas, H-E-B will close early on Thanksgiving Day and will re-open the following morning at normal store hours," H-E-B stated. "Contrary to the common retail practice of moving Black Friday events earlier and earlier each year, H-E-B stands strong in its decision to put family first this holiday season and honor the cherished traditions held by families throughout Texas."
"At H-E-B, we believe that family matters more than anything else, especially during the holiday season," stated H-E-B president Craig Boyan. "We feel strongly that our customers and partners should have the opportunity to spend quality time with their loved ones."
However, that doesn’t mean H-E-B is not participating in Black Friday promotions.
"Our customers can once again expect to see amazing Black Friday deals in all H-E-B plus! locations on their favorite brands and products in electronics, toys, housewares and more," commented Bill Anderson, H-E-B group VP general merchandise. "Our everyday commitment to low prices is especially paramount this holiday season, and we look forward to providing each community with opportunities to save without having to sacrifice time with those they care about most during this special time of year."
Ahold calls on pork suppliers to stop using gestation crates for pregnant sows by 2022
CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold USA is encouraging pork suppliers to start using open housing for pregnant sows by 2022, the supermarket retailer said Friday.
The company, which owns the Stop & Shop, Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle chains, as well as the Peapod online grocery service, said it wanted suppliers to transition from gestation crates to open housing, with the option of using gestation crates during appropriate times to keep sows and piglets healthy and safe.
"Animal welfare is a fundamental part of our responsible retailing practices, and we intend to work with the most reputable suppliers to source safe and affordable pork produced with respect for the animal," Ahold USA VP responsible retailing Jihad Rizkallah said. "Our goal is to work with suppliers who are moving towards a less restrictive environment."
Dannon and American Diabetes Association unite to promote healthy eating
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Dannon will partner with the American Diabetes Association to raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of a healthy, balanced diet.
In helping to support ADA’s Stop Diabetes campaign, Dannon will include the Stop Diabetes logo on packages of its Light and Fit greek yogurt.
“We want to change the perception that people with diabetes have to sacrifice eating all of the foods they love and show there are many appropriate food choices that are also delicious. During American Diabetes Month and through our relationship with the Association, we want to remind people with diabetes that they can incorporate variety into their diets and create a healthy eating pattern that fits their taste preferences and lifestyles,” Amanda Soled, RD, CDN, health affairs manager at Dannon said.
Dannon will also have recipes featured in ADA’s free online recipe resource, Recipes for Healthy Living and in materials mailed to those who have been newly diagnosed with diabetes.
