GSK to submit comments on FDA smoking-cessation products hearing

BY Alaric DeArment

PARSIPPANY, N.J. — The consumer products division of British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline wants its voice heard at a Food and Drug Administration hearing scheduled for next year on a section in a 2009 law to regulate tobacco products that deals with smoking-cessation products, the company said Monday.

GSK Consumer Healthcare said it would submit written comments to the FDA’s public docket in January 2013 concerning its positions on Sec. 918 of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009, scheduled for April 2013. The section deals with products used to treat dependence on tobacco.

The purpose of the hearing is to advance the discussion of expanding the use of smoking cessation medicines, including nicotine-replacement therapy. The drug maker said it endorsed the FDA’s actions and "strongly" recommended that the agency adopt a comprehensive regulatory policy that allows smokers multiple approaches to quitting smoking, citing a study indicating that about 70% of the more than 45 million Americans who smoke want to quit.

Although this article is old, I still felt it important to comment on how Target is making an effort to make a product line that is affordable for people to use to get the treatment they need. I always appreciate when large corporations give up some of their profits to help spread the word and raise awareness for healthy living. On my basketball apparel blog there is a page that focuses on how Nike has tried to help raise awareness for breast cancer. Anyway, thanks again for sharing and I hope more companies get on board with this movement.

Very smart of Target. This aligns their efforts with what Rite Aid is doing with their Diabetes Control project. Other retailers considering a similar strategy will be interested in the Diabetes-Pharmacy.com offering.

Natural Products Association suspends 2013 MarketPlace show

BY Alaric DeArment

WASHINGTON — The Natural Products Association MarketPlace trade show will be suspended, the organization said, citing "new opportunities more strategically aligned with today’s market needs."

The convention had originally been scheduled for June 2013 in Las Vegas. The Natural Products Association and New Hope Natural Media have collaborated to produce the convention since 2008.

"The Natural Products Association appreciates the work we’ve done with New Hope throughout the years," Natural Products Association CEO and executive director John Shaw said. "While it is unfortunate the show won’t go on, we understand the business reasons behind it. NPA has always sought to connect retailers and suppliers in the marketplace. We are committed to this goal and our work with New Hope to achieve it. NPA looks forward to new developments within this relationship in 2013 and beyond."
