Greenies JointCare treats named Product of the Year winner

BY Michael Johnsen

NASHVILLE — The Nutro Co. on Wednesday was awarded the 2011 Product of the Year title in the pet health category by TNS for its Greenies JointCare treats.

"As pet parents are increasingly interested in benefit-focused products, the Greenies brand strives to deliver innovative, targeted treats that allow [pet owners] to provide care in an enjoyable way," stated Brad Quest, product development veterinarian for the Greenies brand. "We discovered that green-lipped mussel, found only in New Zealand waters, provides a novel combination of joint nourishing properties.”

In a clinical study performed by Waltham, the nutrients contained in green-lipped mussel were found to have a beneficial effect on canine joint health, Nutro noted.

The 2011 Product of the Year U.S. shoppers survey conducted by TNS found that 68% of shoppers reported that a consumer-voted award meant more for a new product than an expert’s opinion.

American Diabetes Association teams up with Together Rx Access

BY Alaric DeArment

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Diabetes Association is working with an organization that offers free prescription drug savings cards to help increase access to diabetes medications.

The ADA and Together Rx Access said Wednesday that the cards can help millions of eligible uninsured patients receive savings of 25% to 40% on branded drugs, as well as savings on generics. Nearly 26 million people in the United States are living with diabetes, mostly Type 2 diabetes, many of whom lack health insurance.

“We are pleased to work with the American Diabetes Association to help in its mission to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes,” Together Rx Access executive director Roba Whiteley said. “The Together Rx Access Card provides a much-needed resource for these people so they can better afford the medicines they need to manage their disease and live healthier lives.”

BY Allison Cerra

ITASCA, Ill. — Jewel-Osco is commemorating Black History Month by kicking off its annual “A Taste of Black History” celebration to honor its African-American vendors.

To kick off the month-long program, which now is in its 12th year, the retailer said it would host in-store celebrations at three Chicago stores and one store in Homewood, Ill., and tastings of African-American vendor products each Sunday in February.

“Diversity and developing minority vendors are important to us and the success of our company,” said Jim Seidler, Jewel-Osco organic specialty and ethnic sales and merchandising manager. “Therefore, we would like to thank our African-American vendors for their outstanding contributions that help us meet the needs of our customers every day. In turn, we hope consumers recognize that by purchasing African-American vendor products, they are also supporting these outstanding men and women.”
