Four Canada Safeway stores to receive Tim Hortons coffee outlets

BY Michael Johnsen

CALGARY, Alberta Canada Safeway will be introducing four store-within-a-store Tim Hortons coffee outlets in December here and across Western Canada, the Calgary Herald reported Wednesday morning. The new outlets mark a new partnership with Tim Hortons, a Canada Safeway spokeswoman told the Herald, and should not impede Canada Safeway’s existing partnership with rival Starbucks.

“In this market and in many markets, Starbucks has multiple locations in very close proximity to each other,” Betty Kellsey, public affairs manager at Canada Safeway, told the paper. “What we’ve learned in many cases where there’s multiple Starbucks locations: You tend to share the business between the Starbucks,” she said. “We remain committed to our relationship with Starbucks … and we are looking forward to offering coffee alternatives to Safeway customers in markets where Starbucks is already well-represented.”

There presently are 27 Starbucks within Calgary Safeway stores.

Novartis: Menveo protects infants against meningococcal disease

BY Alaric DeArment

BASEL, Switzerland An investigative vaccine made by Novartis appears to offer good protection against meningococcal disease in infants, according to results of a late-stage clinical trial released Monday.

The Swiss drug maker said results of a phase-3 trial showed that Menveo (meningococcal group A, C, W135 and Y) induced immune responses in a high percentage of babies against four strains of the bacteria. Meningococcal disease occurs suddenly and can cause serious illness and often death during the first year of life.

“In my practice, I have seen the devastating effects of meningococcal disease in infants,” study investigator Stan Block said. “Meningococcal vaccines are being developed that can provide broad protection against the disease in this vulnerable population.”

Navarro expands management team

BY Antoinette Alexander

MIAMI Navarro Discount Pharmacies, which operates 28 stores in Miami, has bolstered its management team with three new executives who will focus on store expansions, remodelings, new business development and e-commerce.

New to Navarro are former Supervalu executive Kevin Shiplett, former principal of Cornerstone Consulting Services Paul DiBrito, and Emilio Yepez, a former executive with ARC Media Consultants.

Shiplett has been named SVP wholesale and business development. Shiplett’s focus is to identify new business opportunities with local retailers to act as distributors for Navarro’s signature products, such as cosmetics and appliances. Previously, Shiplett served as VP retail sales with the Park City Group and VP business development and national accounts for Supervalu.

DiBrito has been named director of real estate and construction. His goal will be to identify and expand new store locations, as well as remodel Navarro’s 28 store locations, three of which have been remodeled in the last 12 months.

Yepez has been appointed director of e-commerce. One of his primary objectives is to develop an online platform for Navarro that offers consumers hard-to-find Hispanic items, over-the-counter health-and-wellness products and specialty items currently sold only at Navarro’s brick-and-mortar stores. The online store will expand the retailer’s product offering throughout the United States and foreign markets.
