FDA approves single-pill HIV drug

FOSTER CITY, Calif. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new single-pill treatment for HIV made by Gilead Sciences and Johnson & Johnson, Gilead said.

Gilead announced the approval of Complera (emtricitabine, rilpivirine, tenofovir disoproxil fumarate). The drug combines Gilead’s Truvada with J&J’s Edurant.

"In the 30 years since the first AIDS cases were reported, we’ve made incredible strides in the treatment of this disease," said Tony Mills, director of medical research at Anthony Mills MD Inc. and investigator in Complera studies. "The concept of a single-tablet regimen has become a goal in HIV drug development, and the standard of care in medical practice in the United States."

Family Dollar marks 7,000th store opening

MEMPHIS — Family Dollar opened its 7,000th store Thursday, further cementing the dollar-store channel as an area of rapid growth.

The store is located in Memphis, Tenn., and features a green building design and a spacious layout for an optimal shopping experience, the company reported.

To commemorate the opening of its 7,000th store in Memphis, Family Dollar completed the celebration with a $7,000 donation to the Mid-South Food Bank, along with cans of food donated by members of the local community.

"Family Dollar is absolutely thrilled to be opening our 7,000th store, and what better place to do so than in the great city of Memphis," Family Dollar chairman and CEO Howard Levine said. "This new store is a special example of our expansion and growth as a nationwide retailer, but gives us a venue to show customers our appreciation by creating an even better, more compelling shopping experience for their families."

To allow all loyal consumers to join in the celebration of the 7,000th store opening, Family Dollar is offering customers nationwide a chance to win Family Dollar gift cards valued from $25 to $500 throughout August at FamilyDollar.com.

For the third quarter, Family Dollar reported a 4.7% same-store sales increase that was just below the company’s expectations for a 5% to 7% gain. Earnings advanced 18.2% to 91 cents, four cents shy of analysts’ consensus estimate of 95 cents.

Though the company may have missed expectations, those expectations were high, showing that both the company and Wall Street see continued value in dollar stores. With the opening of its 7,000th store, Family Dollar won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

GMDC fills communications post

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Global Market Development Center earlier this week named Mark Mechelse to the role of director of industry insights.

"We are excited to welcome Mark Mechelse into GMDC as one of our newest team members," stated Dave McConnell, president and CEO of GMDC. "The addition of his skill set is a compliment to the GMDC strategy that will enhance the connection between our members, as well as GMDC’s education programs; and he will provide insight into market trends."

Mechelse will report to Mark Deuschle, GMDC’s chief marketing officer and VP business development, coordinating GMDC’s communications efforts and marketing messages. In addition, his responsibilities will be to oversee and manage GMDC content on its website and in press releases, and to activate a formidable social media presence, as well as other emerging technologies.

Mechelse has a degree in marketing and advertising from Sheridan College in Toronto. He was a managing director of his own advertising agency, as well as the director of creative and communications at Paramount Cards, prior to its acquisition by Hallmark Cards in 2006. Most recently, Mechelse was the director of client services for AIM Global, a custom and private-label product development company in Nashville, Tenn.
