FDA approves drug for severe epilepsy
SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new drug for treating a severe form of epilepsy, the agency said Monday.
The FDA announced the approval of Onfi (clobazam) tablets, made by Catalent Pharma Solutions and Lundbeck, as an add-on treatment for seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in patients ages 2 years and older. The agency gave the drug orphan drug designation because the disease affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States.
"This is a difficult condition to treat, and it will be helpful to have an additional treatment option," FDA Division of Neurology Products director Russell Katz said.
Investigational Sanofi drug shows improvements in MS patients
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — More than three-quarters of patients with multiple sclerosis using a drug made by Sanofi subsidiary Genzyme did not experience disease relapse for two years, according to results of a late-stage clinical trial revealed over the weekend.
The drug maker announced Saturday results of the "CARE-MS I" trial, the first of two phase-3 clinical trials comparing the investigational drug Lemtrada (alemtuzumab) with Pfizer’s and EMD Serono’s Rebif (interferon beta-1a) in patients with relapsing-remitting MS.
Data from the trial showed that after two years, 78% of patients taking Lemtrada remained relapse-free, compared with 59% of those taking Rebif.
Walmart looks to bring holiday cheer with Christmas price guarantee
BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Walmart announced that it is helping ensure customers pay the lowest price on holiday gifts with the launch of its Christmas price guarantee.
Customers who purchase eligible product at Walmart anytime between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25, and then find those same products advertised for less at another store, will receive a Walmart gift card for the difference through Dec. 25.
"The greatest gift we can give our customers this holiday is great low prices on the things they want most," said Duncan Mac Naughton, chief merchandising officer for Walmart U.S. "Walmart is easing shopping stress this Christmas by allowing customers to shop when and how they want, all while guaranteeing low prices through the entire holiday season."
Walmart’s Christmas price guarantee is valid on purchases made Nov. 1 through Dec. 25 on identical items (the same brand, size, color, quantity, grade and model number) that currently are available at competitor’s stores located within the same local market as a particular Walmart store. To apply for the Christmas price guarantee, customers need to simply bring in their original Walmart cash register receipt and the local competitor’s current printed ad to Walmart’s customer service desk through Dec. 25. Once validated, a gift card for the difference will be issued. Items placed on layaway also will be eligible for the Christmas price guarantee.
