Elmer’s introduces school glue made from natural ingredients

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Elmer’s Products announced today Elmer’s School Glue Naturals — the first and only school glue made with naturally occurring ingredients and available in recycled packaging, according to the company.

Elmer’s pourable School Glue Naturals consists of 99% natural ingredients. The primary ingredient in the adhesive is plants, specifically American-grown corn, a rapidly renewable resource. The bottle is made from 25% post-consumer recycled materials, and the label contains 20% recycled paper, is printed with soy-based ink and is applied with a natural rubber adhesive.

Also made primarily from corn, Elmer’s Naturals Glue Stick formula consists of more than 88% natural ingredients. The sticks are made of 25% post-industrial recycled plastic. The labels are printed with soy ink on FSC-certified paper and the card is made from 100% recycled paper board.

"Through consumer and industry research, we identified a demand for natural adhesive products from eco-conscious parents and teachers," said Lisa Singer, senior product manager for the Elmer’s Stationery category. "While many people still will prefer our traditional white School Glue, we’re proud to fill this niche need in the marketplace with the first and only natural adhesive for school use."

Elmer’s School Glue Naturals come in a single 4-oz. pourable bottle, single 22-g glue stick or 6-g glue sticks sold in two- and four-packs, and in a 30-pack case. Suggested pricing for the pourable glue and 2-pack glue sticks is $3.29. The 30-pack of glue sticks retails for $16.99 for educators.

Walgreens expands ‘get fit’ incentives tied to company’s loyalty program

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Tuesday announced that walking, running and weight-management goals can be logged and tracked through Steps with Balance Rewards, the retailer’s customer loyalty program. Members will receive 20 points per mile, as well as 20 points per day for tracking their weight. Users also can log individual frequent activities that will earn points when recorded. Additionally, members can sync wireless activity trackers such as Fitbit, Withings and BodyMedia to automatically load the number of steps taken — each device linked will earn 250 points. Fitbit and BodyMedia provide wireless activity trackers, and Withings offers wireless scales.

In order to help participants stay motivated and maintain a healthy lifestyle, Walgreens is making it easy for members to set goals, which earn 250 points for the first goal set, track progress and find encouragement from virtual community members. Members also can promote their participation by sharing their activity badges within social media.

“By enhancing our loyalty program to further promote healthy behaviors, we’re encouraging customers to take steps to help them achieve overall wellness,” stated Graham Atkinson, chief marketing and customer experience officer, Walgreens. “It’s also another way Walgreens helps people get, stay and live well.”

Balance Rewards loyalty card holders already have been awarded more than 15 million points for physical activity through participation in the Walk with Walgreens program.

U.S. Green Building Council commends Ahold USA for green-building initiative

CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold USA now has the largest number of stores that have received leadership in energy and environmental design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, the supermarket operator said Tuesday.

Ahold USA, the U.S. division of Netherlands-based Royal Ahold, said six newly constructed stores had received LEED certification. They include four stores in the Stop & Shop New England and New York Metro divisions, one in the Giant-Landover division and one in the Giant-Carlisle division. The stores feature white roofs to reflect sunlight and reduce heat gain, skylights to collect daylight and LED lighting.

"We congratulate and commend Ahold for their leadership as an LEED Volume partner," USGBC president, CEO and chairman Rick Fedrizzi said. "With each new LEED-certified building, we get one step closer to USGBC’s vision of a sustainably built environment within a generation."

So far, the company has 56 stores that have LEED certification for existing buildings.

"By utilizing these innovative green building technologies, we are building all new stores across our retail divisions according to the LEED standards to reduce our environmental impact in the communities we serve for future generations," Ahold USA VP responsible retailing Jihad Rizkallah said.
