Duracell Powermat debuts new products

LAS VEGAS — The joint venture of Duracell and Powermat Technologies has announced its new product lineup.

Duracell Powermat, which formed back in September, said the new line of Duracell Powermat products provides consumers with "unparalleled access" to power in a two-part system that pairs newly designed charging mats — in either black or white — with receivers and a portable wirelessly charged backup battery that lets consumers take power with them for up to a full charge while on the go, Duracell Powermat said. The new Duracell Powermat complete charging kit also will be available in first quarter 2012 to provide consumers with a one-stop option for wireless power.

Also new from the company is the Duracell Powermat application, which will identify users when their smartphones are running low on power and notify them about how much power they have left before directing them to the nearest networked location.

The products will be showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week.

In related news, Duracell Powermat also announced that Grammy award winner Shawn “Jay Z” Carter has signed a multi-year global agreement with the company as an investment partner. He also will be the spokesman of the Duracell Powermat JV.

Food Lion taps Mullen as new advertising agency

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion has appointed a new advertising agency of record.

The supermarket chain announced that Mullen will be responsible for developing Food Lion’s advertising campaigns and partnering with the company on integrated marketing initiatives in support of the Food Lion brand. The terms of the contract were not disclosed. New creative and advertising could take effect as early as first quarter 2012.

"Mullen will be a great partner to enhance the Food Lion brand, especially as we continue to implement the new Food Lion strategy in 2012," Food Lion president Cathy Green Burns said. "Mullen has a unique opportunity to help us transform our business as we strengthen the Food Lion brand. We look forward to leveraging the creative and strategic insights of the Mullen team to help us educate our customers about Food Lion."

A&P moves ahead with turnaround strategy as it closes more stores

MONTVALE, N.J. — Grocer A&P has announced plans to shutter 14 stores in four states as it prepares to emerge from bankruptcy.

The company has filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York seeking approval to close the stores. The store closures are expected to be completed in the company’s fiscal first quarter, subject to court approval.

"We are continuing to take the steps necessary to position A&P to emerge from Chapter 11 with a strong future and ensure that we remain focused on our top priority ­ providing great value and service to our customers every day. As part of our preparations to emerge from Chapter 11, we have decided to close these 14 underperforming locations," A&P president and CEO Sam Martin said. "While this was a very difficult decision that will unfortunately impact some of our customers, partners, associates and the surrounding communities, these actions are absolutely necessary as we continue to strengthen A&P’s operating foundation and improve our performance."

As part of the store closing process, A&P will work to facilitate future store assignments based on associates¹ collective bargaining agreements. The company also will encourage customers to shop at its other neighborhood stores in close proximity to the closing store locations.
